Sts. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church of Ozolmuiža was built in 1820 by the foundation of
counts Plāteri-Zībergi. It is a stone building with a small bell tower. The church has a huge stone altar with
four columns and a massive cross. It is a monument of state importance.

The late Baroque and early Classicism building was commissioned by Duke Peter Byron of Courland and Zemgale, and it was built between 1773 and 1776 on the basis of a design by a Danish architect. It was the castle of Duchess Anna. The first university in Latvia, Academia Petrina was established here in 1775 and named after Duke Peter. The first observatory was installed at the academy in 1772, and a high school was in the building during the age of the Russian Empire. Among graduates are distinguished Latvians such as Krišjānis Barons, Jānis Alunāns and Jānis Čakste, as well as the Lithuanian Antanas Smetona. The Jelgava Museum of History and Art took over the building in 1952, and in 1975 it was named after the Old Master Ģederts Eliass (1887-1975). The exhibition speaks to the history of the city and surrounding area during and after the period of the Duchy of Courland and Zemgale. Outside the impressive building are four cannons from the period of the duchy, as well as monument to Eliass that was designed in 1987 by the sculptor Jānis Zariņš. Another monument, “Lāčplēsis and the Black Knight,” was designed by the sculptor Kārlis Jansons and commemorates the liberators of Jelgava. |

Laimonis and Ilga Veidemanis lived in Roja 20 or 30 years ago. They were deaf and loved to produce models of sailing ships of various sizes. This was based on a dream about the big ships of their ancestors and the wide seas upon which the couple could not sail. The models are very precise, designed with much care and love. The couple never learned the secrets of ship models, but their collection has been inherited by Laimonis’ granddaughter, who wants to display the wonderful collection and her grandfather’s careful work to the public. This is a farm where there are some 10 different kinds of strawberries on many hectares of land. Anita Rescenko offers a six-day strawberry cure to improve your health. Pick and taste strawberries, purchase them fresh and clean. There are strawberry masks, dishes prepared with strawberries, clay masks and compresses against joint pains. Visitors can learn flower arranging, boat around the local lake, etc.

Where the little Rumbiņa river flows into the Daugava (on the left bank of the little river opposite the Lielvārde park), there is the Dievkalns castle hill that has been reduced by the waters of the Daugava. It is also known as the Cepure hill. According to antiquities that have been found here, representatives of Baltic tribes lived here from the first millennium BC to the 6th or 7th century AD. The level of the Ķegums hydroelectric power plant can be reached by a staircase from which the best view of this object can be found.

The first written records of the manor date from 1422, its fate in the 20th C was very chequered with changing hands and functions many times. Today there is a ceramic workshop where you can buy a range of products, model your own pieces, or decorate or glaze blank items to your taste. A woodwork shop shows various woodworking techniques. |

One of the largest castles in Kurzeme, this building has been preserved in fairly good shape. Work on its began in the mid-13th century, and it was commissioned by the heads of the Dome Cathedral in Rīga. In 1434, the estate was bought by the bishop of Kurzeme. The Maidel and Osten-Sacken dynasties owned it from the 16th to the 20th century. The Dundaga Castle burned down twice and has been rebuilt many times. The last reconstruction was in 1905, after the castle was burned down during the revolution. Of interest on both sides of the castle’s door are stone carvings of a knight and a bishop. In recent years, the hotel in the castle has been renovated, as has the second floor hallway and a terrace that is popular for weddings. There are many legends about the castle, including one about a wedding of elves and another about the Green Lady. Today the building houses the Dundaga School of Music and Art, a hotel, party rooms, the Dundaga Tourism Information Centre and various exhibitions. It is worth finding a guide to tour the castle. Groups of tourists can also order tastings of local foods. |

One of the largest karst areas in Estonia is found here. The unique Witch’s well is one of the most interesting parts of this area. During spring floods (not every year, and for only a short period of time), the well erupts with underground river waters to create an unusually powerful karst stream that can pump out as much as 100 litres per hour.

The radio telescope at Irbene was at one time used for anti-espionage purposes. There were various military units and objects in Irbene, including a military housing estate that has now been abandoned. The radio telescope is now run by the Radio Astronomy Centre of the Latvian Academy of Sciences for scientific purposes. Guided tours of the object are available.

The Baltic Coastal Hiking Route starts at the center of Mazirbe village where you can see the Livonian National House. Continuing through small forest and country roads past the former Mazirbe Naval school, it winds through small coastal Livonian villages: Košrags, Pitrags and then Saunags. The Livonian coast is the only place where you can get to know the cultural history heritage of one of the smallest peoples in the world, the Livonians. In this section, the indicating signs are in both the Latvian and Livonian language. At the end of route you will see Cape Kolka, the point where the Great Wave Sea meets the Little Wave Sea. It is one of the most popular bird-watching sites on the Baltic seacoast. |
