The old wooden tower at this site was torn down and replaced with the one that is there now. The restored tower offers one of the loveliest views in Eastern Latvia – one of the eight curves of the Daugava. This is the Rozališki curve. Here you will get a whole new sense of the Daugava River and its mighty valley in a place where the waters of a hydroelectric plant bubble away in our present day and age. It is claimed that the scene that is seen on the 10 lats note is based on the view which can be seen to the West from the tower. |

Many trails are equipped with viewing towers for birdwatching. Randu meadows near Ainaži contains one third of Latvia’s entire plant species. A boardwalk leads through reeds to a viewing platform with views over the meadow and the sea. Saaremaa island is interesting with very different natural attractions to the mainland - dolomite cliffs, juniper heaths, a meteorite lake and rocky sea shore. The tour passes rural farms and traditional villages typical of the coastal areas. Hiiumaa island is a laid back place and retains a very Estonian atmosphere with an important bird reserve at Käina Bay, unusual Sääre Tirp as well as several small islets off its south-eastern coast. Back on the mainland, Paldiski peninsula gives a glimpse of the recent history with its former Soviet military base |

The Alantos Estate is in the village of Naujasodžio, and it was built in the style of Neo-Classicism in the 19th century. The estate is surrounded by a park with many types of trees, as well as a set of ancillary buildings. The mansion is reminiscent of an Italian villa, and the Neo-Romantic park has alleys of trees and three ponds of various sizes. The trees were planted so that over the course of time, their trunks would grow together to ensure mighty crowns. Alongside the park are a few gazebos, an obelisk that stands a few metres high, as well as white marble sculptures of Venus and Jupiter. |

XII. This park surrounds the mansion of the Biržuvenai Estate, and it is based on the terrain of the Virvite River and an old river that provides water for the park. The central part of the park is regularly designed, while the rest has elements of landscape. Opposite the estate is a glass sculpture, and on its western side is a wooden pergola. Local trees dominate in the park, but there are also trees from other countries. Of importance is a group of oak trees on the banks of the river, as is an alley of linden trees that leads to the pond in the direction of the estate. |

By far one of the most impressive Soviet military objects in Northern Vidzeme, this base has now been abandoned. There are buildings, underground bunkers, missile silos, areas of the firing of missiles, etc. This is one of the few remaining places in Latvia where a monument to Lenin still stands. The stone bust once stood in the central square of Alūksne. During the restoration of independence, it was taken down and moved to the missile base. We recommend that you bring a guide with you – otherwise it won’t be worth much.

This is the centre for Catholicism in Latvia and a destination for pilgrims from all around the world. Its origins date back to 1699, when the Dominican Order established a cloister. One year later, it built the first wooden church. The brick Church of St Dominic and the buildings of the cloister were erected between 1768 and 1800. The Baroque church is distinguished by two towers that are 60 metres high. The pulpit, organ prospectus, organ, prayer bench and pews come from the 18th century, while the side altars date back to the early 19th century. The central altar includes the painting “The Miraculous Mother of God of Aglona,” which is thought to have healing properties. For that reason, it is unveiled only during important events. In advance of a visit to Latvia by Pope John Paul II in 1993, the complex underwent major rebuilding and restoration. On August 15 each year, hundreds and thousands of pilgrims arrive in Aglona to celebrate the assumption of the Virgin Mary. The holy stream of Aglona is 100 metres to the East of the basilica. |
