In Dagda, on the side of Daugavpils Street, there is a forested hillock that is the Lubāne castle hill. On the upper part of its southern side, there’s a viewing area which offers a view of the small Lake Lubenenis, the eastern part of Dagda, and the white tower of the local Catholic church. Legend has it that treasure is buried here.

Found in the Alsunga Museum, the workshop has been open since 2009, showing people how various ceramics can be made from clay. Visitors can try their hand at the task or just watch as the clay is shaped, spun and, finally, glazed. |

The museum at Valdemāra Street 47 was opened in 1969 in the building of the maritime school that was opened in 1864 at the suggestion of Krišjānis Valdemārs. The school trained more than 1,000 sea captains and helmsmen. The exhibition at the museum relates to the operations of the school, as well as the building of sailing ships on the Vidzeme shoreline during the latter half of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century. There is a collection of anchors, as well as the top of the Ainaži lighthouse, which was once washed away by the sea, but has been restored. |

The biography of Krišjānis Valdemārs tells us that during the summer of 1839, teachers and students from the Lubezere school spent a few days on the coastline in Roja, where Valdemārs would later help to build a maritime school. The area was breath-taking and unforgettable for the little boy. “The noble appearance of the sea grabbed the spirit of the young man so powerfully that during those three days, I thought about nothing other than the noble sea, with childish courage that allowed me to prepare a plan for a deeper port in the Roja River so that larger boats and small ships could enter it,” Valdemārs wrote. The Akmeņupīte river starts in the highlands and ends at the Daugava, and it is a rapid river only during the spring or after lots of rain. Otherwise it is a shallow little river with a rocky bottom. On the shores of the river is a nice path with several places to relax or to build a campfire (firewood is available). Water from the local streams is potable.

This park was established to protect Lithuania’s longest lake, Lake Asveja (> 20 km). The lake is in a sub-glacial valley carved out by ice during the Ice Age, and it actually resembles a wide and curvy river.

Ancient legends say that ship sank in the sea near the old cemetery during a storm and during a worship service. The pastor and members of the congregation volunteered to use a rowboat to save the crew of the ship. Some of the men were rescued, while others were washed ashore. In honour of this tragic, but also happy solution, the captain called the place Feliksberga, or the Lucky Shore. Later it became known as Pilsberga, and it was renamed Jūrkalne only in 1925. |

The Lielstraupe Castle is the only building in Latvia which contains a Medieval castle and a church. Work on the castle began in 1263. The building suffered great damage during the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as during the riots of 1905. The complex was restored in 1909 by the architect Wilhelm Bockslaff. There are several artistic monuments in the church – the organ loft from the 17th century and the pulpit paintings of the 18th century. In 1944, two stained glass windows produced by the artist Sigismunds Vidbergs were installed at the church – Golgotha and Birth of Christ. The tower contains a clock produced by a local clockmaker, and there is a sun dial on the wall of the church. Visitors to the park of the castle will see the wooden bell tower which dates back to 1744. A memorial plaque to men who fell during World War I and Latvia's liberation battles was installed in the church in 1938. A drugs treatment hospital was installed in the castle in 1963. The church is open during worship services, and the rest of the complex can only be viewed from the outside. |

The eastern, southern and western shores of Lake Rāzna have roads which offer many lovely and unusual views of Latvia’s second largest lake and its surrounding landscape. Particularly lovely is the road between Foļvarkova and Vilkakrogs, which is part of the Rēzekne-Ezernieki road.
