Ruins of a Livonian Order castle tower atop a steep hill alongside the Pärnu-Valga highway in Helme. The castle changed hands from Germans to Russians and Lithuanians to Swedes who eventually destroyed it in 1658. The spring at the foot of the hill is believed to cure seven diseases. |

Located at Daugavas Street 58 in Skrīveri, this was the first home of the Andrejs Upītis (1877-1970). It was built in 1908, but the one that is there now was built on the foundations of the first one in 1921. The building houses a museum which features the life and work of the writer, including the writing his great novel “The Green Earth.” There is a garden around the building. In 1952, Upītis gifted the house and garden to the state. The museum offers tours and educational programmes. |

In the barn of Padure manor (the only one three-storey barn in Latvia built in the empire style) the groups of tourists are offered kocha (a substantial pearl barley porridge with onions and meat), differents soups (fish, sorrel), dumplings, cheese and differents sweet dishes. The tasting of home-made wine. For those interested, the owner will tell about yearly traditions, as well as the barn’s history. In the Berzini homestead they bake exceptionally tasty wheat and rye bread in accordance with the old folk recipes. The taste and smell is the result of baking bread in a special oven which is more than 70 years old. It is possible to order bread, or, having booked a visit beforehand, to make and bake your own bread loaf. The owners will teach you bread baking traditions and use recipes from their ancestors to bake loaves in a true bread oven. |

This layer was established during the Ordovician Period between 450 and 480 million years ago, and it is made up of the remnants of plants and animals from that age. In the Kohtla-Nõmme suburb, there is a shaft which can be toured in the company of a guide who will tell you that this is the only layer of its kind in the Baltic States. He will tell you about how the gas mixture has been extracted over the course of history.

Established in 1900 at the place where the Pērse River flows into the Daugava (now the reservoir of the Pļaviņas hydroelectric power plant), the park offers a look at 17th century Swedish cannons and monuments from Medieval graves. Next to the high school in the park is a restored fountain, “Head of a Faun,” which was near the legendary Pērse waterfall during the 1930s. The waterfall is now underwater, but its location is indicated by a stone sculpture, “Girl of Pērse,” which was created by the sculptor Juris Zihmanis. A path leads to an 11 metre high wooden sculpture, “For Eternity,” by the sculptor Ģirts Burvis, and another sculpture, “Little Owl,” which is the work of the Rurāns brothers, both of whom are sculptors of wooden sculptures.

The late Baroque and early Classicism building was commissioned by Duke Peter Byron of Courland and Zemgale, and it was built between 1773 and 1776 on the basis of a design by a Danish architect. It was the castle of Duchess Anna. The first university in Latvia, Academia Petrina was established here in 1775 and named after Duke Peter. The first observatory was installed at the academy in 1772, and a high school was in the building during the age of the Russian Empire. Among graduates are distinguished Latvians such as Krišjānis Barons, Jānis Alunāns and Jānis Čakste, as well as the Lithuanian Antanas Smetona. The Jelgava Museum of History and Art took over the building in 1952, and in 1975 it was named after the Old Master Ģederts Eliass (1887-1975). The exhibition speaks to the history of the city and surrounding area during and after the period of the Duchy of Courland and Zemgale. Outside the impressive building are four cannons from the period of the duchy, as well as monument to Eliass that was designed in 1987 by the sculptor Jānis Zariņš. Another monument, “Lāčplēsis and the Black Knight,” was designed by the sculptor Kārlis Jansons and commemorates the liberators of Jelgava. |

Black currants are grown on 3 ha of land at Bānīši, and for several years the owner has used the method that is so popular abroad -- allowing people to visit the farm to pick all of the berries that they need. |
