On this trip you will encounter a rich blend of wetland, woodland and coastal habitats, when almost all the species have arrived and some passage migrants still remain, with the possibility to see around 200 different species. Birdwatching starts in the Gauja National Park with beautiful rolling relief, then goes to the eastern edge of the Gulf of Riga and Lake Burtnieks where there is also the chance of night trekking on the flood plains. Seda bog with its reed beds and flood plains is rich in wildlife. Next day canoeing along the Gauja river will offer a different viewpoint to see the birds, plus with luck some beaver and other wild fauna. Then you pass through oak forest to Lake Lubans. Its wetlands and fish ponds form one of the prime birdwatching sites in the country. A local speciality - fish-soup - will keep you warm. The site is also one of the first known stone-age settlements in Latvian territory. On the way back to Riga there is a stop at Garkalne pine forest. |

This is a homestead that is three km from the centre of Vecpiebalga and is in a lovely place – the Incēni hill. There is a museum here featuring the author of the legendary fairy tale “Pussy’s Mill” by Kārlis Skalbe (1879-1945). The poet and prose writer built the building in 1926 and spent summers there from that year until 1944. The museum was opened in 1987. The western slope of Vaktskalns hill right alongside the museum offers a lovely view of Lake Alauksts. The cremated remains of Skalbe and his wife, Lizete, were reinterred at the location in 1992 from Sweden, where the poet died. There is a unique monument to them in the form of a stone boat. |

The Great Ķemeri Bog Boardwalk is located in Ķemeri National Park. The national park covers an area of 38,165 hectares. The Great Ķemeri Bog Boardwalk immerses visitors in the world of moss, small pine trees, deep pools, tiny dark lakes and the smell of wild rosemary. An astute visitor will notice the carnivorous sundew plant and a variety of birds – wood sandpipers, white wagtails and tree pipits – and will also be able to hear cranes further away. Those who prefer shorter strolls can take the small boardwalk loop (approx. 1.4 km), while those who choose the great loop (approx. 3.4 km) will be rewarded with the opportunity to climb to a viewing platform that offers a magnificent view of the bog from above. The Great Ķemeri Bog Boardwalk has become a popular place for landscape and wildlife photographers. The whole trail is laid to wooden boardwalk and therefore is fully accessible and can be walked without a professional guide. |

The Buse (Matkule) castle hill is near the Imula River. From the castle hill and from the opposite shore of the river, you can find one of the loveliest views of Kurzeme’s small rivers. Their appearance is best when trees and other flora are bare and the view is unimpeded. A wonderful view of the Imula valley is also seen on the road to the castle hill – near the Buse homestead.

In October 1948, nationalist partisans who opposed the Soviet regime built a 9x6 m bunker in the forests of Īle for themselves. Five months later, the KGB attacked the bunker. After five hours of gunfire, 15 partisans lay dead, and another nine were captured. The bunker has been restored in commemoration of this event, and it is open to visitors.

Viewing area is at the end of the Ēvaži shore trail (300 metres). The shore here has been washed by the waves and is up to 15 metres high. This is the only place along the Kurzeme shore of the Bay of Rīga where a high dune opens up such a lovely view of the bay water.

The Lejas Kleperi farm straddles the boundary between the Cēsis and Valka Districts. The farm is 119.4 hectares large, with 86.1 hectares of forestland. The farm’s work is centred on forestry. In 1992, a private museum of farming and forestry equipment was set up in one of the residential buildings. The museum’s collection is constantly being updated.

Preiļu Siers is the largest cheese manufacturer in Latvia and exports 90% of its output. There are three “Preilis” stores in the town (Daugavpils Street 66A, Tirgus laukums 5, Rēzeknes iela 15) where are the widest range of Preiļu Siers products. Three kind of tastings of cheese "Čedars" produced in Preiļi, as well as "Čedars" cheese ice cream and a movie about the company are offered by local home producers "Pampūkas" beach terrace cafe, located in the active part of the city - beach area of Preiļi Park (pre-registration by phone 25867735, runs from the second Sunday of May till the second Sunday of September). In Preiļi , next to A/S "Preiļu siers" factory (Daugavpils iela 75) is one of few monuments to cheese in the world – the only one of its kind in Latvia. There are only four monuments for cheese in the world, two of them located in France, and one in each - Canada and USA. Therefore Preili can safely be called the cheese capital of Latvia. |

Kaņieris is a seriously overgrown and
shallow seaside lake. Its water level was
adjusted several times during the 20th
century so as to obtain agricultural lands.
The lake has 14 islands, among which nine
are natural and the rest are artificial and
aimed at attracting nesting water birds.
Lake Kaņieris has one of the richest
diversities of birds in Latvia. An
ornithological nature reserve was
established here in 1964. In 1989, the lake
was placed on the list of major birding
locations in Europe, and in 1995 it was put
on the list of the Ramsar Convention. At
the southeastern shore of the lake is a
boating facility (only rented boats are
permitted on the lake). A bird-watching
tower was erected on the Riekstu
peninsula in 2009

Lielbātas dzidravots tek no rietumiem uz austrumiem pretī saulei, tāpēc jau izsenis tiek uzskatīts par maģisku, pat svētu, kam piemīt dziednieciskas spējas. Vēstures materiālos Lielbātas avots pirmo reizi pieminēts 1253. gadā un līdz šim brīdim turpina savu plūdumu. Lielbātas avots atrodas sakoptā un ekoloģiski tīrā vidē. Laikam ritot, avota ūdens plūsma nav mazinājusies, bet tieši pretēji, tā ir pieņēmusies spēkā un ar apbrīnojamu jaudu avots turpina dot unikālu dabas velti – tīru, bioloģiski aktīvu, pareizi strukturētu ūdeni, neapstājoties ne dienu, ne nakti, ne ziemu, ne vasaru. Netālu no avota atrodas vēsturiskā Vaiņodes jeb Lielbātas pils, kuru 19. gs. vidū būvēja barons Osten Sakens. Vēstures liecības liecina, ka šī vieta pils būvniecībai nav izvēlēta nejauši. 1923. gadā pilī tika izveidota sanatorija, kas ne tikai bija priekšzīmīgākā Latvijā, bet varēja cienīgi līdzināties ārzemju sanatorijām. Tam par iemeslu bija dabiski tīrā un dziednieciskā vide, kas saglabājusies līdz pat mūsdienām. Lielbātas pils ir privātīpašums un apmeklētājiem nav pieejama, taču Lielbātas avots ir brīvi pieejams, un katram ir iespējams nogaršot avota ūdeni. The estate of 12 buildings and a park has survived almost completely to this very day. The main building of the estate was erected on a largish oval island in the 1840s, and it has a moat all around it. This was meant to resemble fortified Medieval castles. The mansion is currently home to the local parish government, library and post office. Visitors can take a tour of the estate and its surroundings. There are stories about the estate to say that the baron had a beautiful daughter who, like the Rose of Turaida, refused to obey her father's instructions. Rankas Dairy was established in 1996 and manufactured some 80 dairy processing products, including cheese, cottage cheese, cream, fermented dairy products, desserts, etc. This is one of five companies in Latvia that is allowed to manufacture one of the EU’s guaranteed traditional characteristics product, “Summer Solstice” cheese. The products are available at the “Rīmaļnieks” store that is alongside the dairy. |
