A zenith missile brigade division at Ragaciems

The coastal border guard of Ragaciems 2

With full purpose, we “wandered” into the restricted beach territory, and we were immediately “arrested” by two soldiers armed with Kalashnikovs.
During the Soviet era, this was the only place along the Latvian shoreline with a barbed wire fence that stretched into the sea. In other words, it was the only place where you could not walk on the beach because of a military facility that was there. I remember an event at high school in the late 1980s, perhaps in 1989. With full purpose, we “wandered” into the restricted beach territory, and we were immediately “arrested” by two soldiers armed with Kalashnikovs. They weren’t aggressive. They were actually quite friendly – we took some photographs with them and each went on our way. I guess the upcoming changes in Latvia had had an effect on the Border Guard’s approach to those who “violated” the border.

There’s hardly anything left of the zenith missile base which once stood here for the purpose of protecting the western boundaries of the USSR – even specialists would have a hard time finding the location.
