A Border Guard facility at Mersrags

Crossing the border regime zone

During the Soviet era the entire coastline from Mērsrags was part of the border regime zone. Civilians who were not local residents and did not have specially authorised permission to visit the area could not do so officially.
During the Soviet era the entire coastline from Mērsrags was part of the border regime zone. Civilians who were not local residents and did not have specially authorised permission to visit the area could not do so officially. Ahead of the bridge over the Mērsrags canal, there was a Border Guard facility with a bar that was raised when a car crossed the bridge. That happened very seldom, because the coastline was not very much populated, and there were far, far fewer cars at that time than there are today. Despite this, there were regularly scheduled yellow buses, the so called Icarus buses, which travelled from the Sloka bus station all the way to Kolka and Mazirbe.
