Mazirbe Coast guard facility

Travel permits in the frontier zone

Border guards used to raid our facilities all the time, and sometimes people were asked to present their permits to be in the area several times in one day.
I worked at the National Slītere Reserve in Soviet times. The headquarters for the reserve were at the Liv People’s Centre. Border guards used to raid our facilities all the time, and sometimes people were asked to present their permits to be in the area several times in one day. I had a pass, and I remember that when you were travelling from Dundaga to Mazirbe, the frontier zone began at Jaundundaga, where there was a border guard facility and the road was blocked.

This coast guard facility was housed in a building that used to be a maritime school. In the post-Soviet era, accommodations were offered at the building. The coast guard tower is one of the best-preserved objects of its kind along the Latvian shoreline.
