Around 1984, I was taking part in a tourism competition on the north-western shore of Lake Ummis. I was surprised to spot Soviet tanks a few hundred metres away. I guess their base was closer to the sea. Along with the tourism competitions, there were two tanks on training manoeuvres. The old tank route is still there, although small pine trees have overrun it. It led from the Lilaste station along the northern shore of Lake Ummis, and then turned south toward Dzirnezers. I don’t know where it went from there. The former tank route from Lilaste to Dzirnezers is very visible in shots taken from aeroplanes or satellites. In fact it is a comparatively straight, sandy, overgrown and wide track. Off-road racers use it for their own purposes today.
