We hadn’t had to dig deep into our own savings to fund a week’s holiday in Tuja. But we would have been happy to pay far more for the large wooden beach house in which we stayed. Its huge gardens swept down to the wide sands of the Baltic’s Bay of Riga and its decked terrace looked towards Sweden and the fiery setting of the (almost) midnight sun. It even had a sauna house in its grounds, complete with plunge pond. And, inside, it was all Western-style comfort.
