This saloon is located 5 km from Madona and at the edge of a highway in the forests of Smecere – the 37th kilometre of the Pļaviņas-Gulbene road. The building in which the saloon is housed was built in the 17th century, and today it is home to a modern leisure complex made up of a three-star hotel, a saloon and cafe, and a music club.

Lāči brand bread is popular in Latvia and abroad, because the bakery uses ancient mastery and skills. Baking traditions are supervised by 2 master bakers and 4 journeymen. You can take a tour of the bakery, knead and bake your own little loaf of bread, have lunch at a cosy saloon and purchase the bakery’s products. Lāči uses its own ingredients for its dishes, combining them with seasonal products from local farms. The bakery shop offers a wide range of products from bread to confectionery.

The garden is opposite the Brenguļi brewery, where unfiltered and unpasteurised beers are made from locally grown grains and on the basis of the knowledge of ancestors. The beer garden offers light and dark Brenguļi beer, as well as Latvian dishes.

The “Katrinkrogs” saloon

The saloon is on the shore of Lake Alūksne and the Jaunsētas country tourism and leisure centre.  The log saloon’s interior is based on the style of the 17th century, when a girl was born in the area who was raised by her foster father Ernst Glick and would later become Empress Catharine the Great, Wife of Peter the Great of Russia.
Latvian cuisine:  Pike or pike-perch soup with fish from Lake Alūksne, pork tongue, fried egg in a coat of flour, stacked rye bread with loganberry jam and whipped cream.
