Until 1724, the Cecina semi-estate belonged to the Hilsen dynasty. When daughter Jadviga married Jans Šadurskis, the estate was recorded as the Malnava Estate in 1774. Ownership of the estate changed hands several times. The mansion is built in the style of Classicism with Baroque elements. The granary is on one side of the yard, while the mansion is on the other side. During agrarian reforms in the 1920s, the estate was one of the largest ones in Latvia, covering 12,400 ha. The mansion was damaged during World War Ii, and the original interior design was lost during reconstruction. Among other buildings, the granary, built in the style of Classicism during the first half of the 19th century, has been preserved, as have several other buildings. The park of the estate has exotic bushes and trees, as well as two cement bunkers, one of which was briefly visited by Adolf Hitler. The estate also has a vodka distillation facility where you will learn all about the process from antiquity to the present day. |

Established: 1890. The Wagner Garden is located near Lake Jumprava. Its originator was Friedrich Wagner, who grew fruit trees, decorative shrubs and flowers. This garden contains one of Latvia’s oldest and best collections of foreign trees and shrubs. There are trails for perambulations in the park.

To the south of Koknese, the Destiny Garden is on an island that is surrounded by the waters of the Pļaviņas hydroelectric power plant (there is a bridge to the shore). The aim of this fundamental open-air object was to commemorate people in Latvia who suffered because of totalitarian regimes. The first work here began in 2008, and the designer of the landscape was a Japanese landscape architect, Shunmyo Masuno. Work on the garden continues, but it is already a popular tourist destination. The first permanent structure is a terrace that offers a view of the Koknese castle ruins and the local Lutheran church. This means that there will be something new each time that people visit the park. People are invited to bring rocks for this nationally important location that commemorates Latvia’s history. |

Wooden slat weaving workshop is located in Jelgava county, Sesava parish. Craftswoman is making different type of wooden slat baskets and basketry from pine, linden, aspen and black alder. There are several different categories of baskets, available in different sizes - picknick baskets, baskets for berry and mushroom picking, trays, baskets for firewood, laundry baskets, onion / garlic baskets, baskets for kids, and diverse baskets for daily use. Various inscriptions and drawings are also made on the weavings. They also accept orders for individual orders. In the workshop it is possible to see the wooden slat basket weaving process as well as have the opportunity to learn to make your own basket. |

The mouth of the most beautiful river of Vidzeme. On the seashore between the mouths of River Gauja and River Daugava, one of the largest dune ranges in Latvia with distinctive parabolic dunes overgrown with forest (wooded dunes) is situated. The Mouth of River Gauja is unique as it is one of the few major rivers in Latvia and in EU countries to flow into the sea naturally. There is no harbour or other hydro-engineering construction. It is a popular recreation area in the vicinity of Riga and Saulkrasti while, unfortunately, the lack of infrastructure makes it suffer from anthropogenic load. Not far from the rivermouth, hidden in dunes, there are pillboxes which were built in 1920 or 30ies as anti-airborne barriers. There was a whole range of them along the coastline from the mouth of the River Lielupe to the mouth of the River Gauja forming a part of the Daugavgrīva Fortress fortifications. The pillbox is made of concrete, ca 1.5m thick. Every year, on the 3rd Sunday in August, a lamprey festival takes place in Carnikava town by the Gauja rivermouth. Carnikava is called the Lamprey Capital as it is famous for its lamprey fishing tradition and generous catches. The Mouth of the River Gauja is a good bird-watching area, especially in spring and autumn when one can observe the highest variety of species. This is one of the loveliest waterfalls in Estonia – up to 6 m in height and 50 m in width. Recommended: The rapid Keila River has carved a cliffy canyon behind the waterfall, with a flow of water that falls down a major distance. It’s worth hiking through the Keila park to the shore of the Bay of Finland (~1 km), then returning along the other bank of the river.

The Vienkoči Park features one-log objects manufactured by its originator. You can examine mock-ups of the Nurmiži Castle and other buildings including the Sand House, and you can also take part in thematic events. Men can produce equipment to drain birch juice from trees, wile women can try their hand at jewellery making from natural materials. People manufactured one-log objects during the Mesolithic Era, and one-log boats have been used since the 9th century (several of them can be seen at the park). |
