Established: 1931. The arboretum was set up at the suggestion of Latvia’s distinguished author Anna Brigadere. After her death and until 1935, the arboretum was supported and expanded by book publisher Jānis Rapa. There are some 180 foreign trees and shrubs of various kinds here. Some of the plants are outside the arboretum itself. Unique plants: The Bunge’s Ash (Fraxinus chinensis), the Eastern Black Walnut (Juglans nigra), the American Buckeye (Aesculus glabra), the Smoketree (Cotinus coggyria), the White Mulberry (Morus Alba), and the Kentucky Yellowwood (Cladrastis kentukea).

This park was established to protect Lithuania’s longest lake, Lake Asveja (> 20 km). The lake is in a sub-glacial valley carved out by ice during the Ice Age, and it actually resembles a wide and curvy river.

Along with the Nagļu ponds, these are Latvia’s largest fishing ponds. They were established on the flood-land peat areas of Lake Lubāns in the 1970s, when the hydrotechnical system of the lake was first established. The Lubāna-Gaigalava road bisects the Kvāpāni-Īdeņa ponds. There are three bird-watching towers on the dams of the ponds. The ponds are a major location for water bird nests, as well as places for migrating birds to rest. There are extensive bird-watching opportunities in the area.

Vienīgā baznīca nacionālā parka teritorijā. Tā atrodas Kirblas (Kirbla) ciemā – uz neliela pacēluma, kas Baltijas ledus ezera laikā bijusi sala, kuru no visām pusēm ietvēris ūdens. Kirblas baznīcas pirmsākumi ir meklējami 16. gs. un par tās celtniecību saglabājušies dažādi interesanti nostāsti. Tas ir viens no mazākajiem Igaunijas dievnamiem (29 x 11 m).

Находится в 0,1 м к югу от развалин Гробиньского замка, на правом берегу Гробиньского водохранилища. Гробиня является одним из древних заселенных мест Латвии, так как в период с VII по IX вв. (согласно другим источникам IV – Х вв.) здесь находилась крупная известная на территории теперешней Балтии скандинавская колония торговцев и воинов. Переселенцы-колонисты из Готланда и Швеции образовали колонию на холме правого берега судоходной в то время реки Аланде Скабаржкалнсе. Считается, что именно здесь находился упоминаемый в хрониках IX века куршский Юрпилс (Seeburg). Происхождение топонима (Скабаржкалнс) связывают с тем фактом, что в Курземе грабы в свое время назвали гробами. Скабаржкалнс - древнее городище куршей, рядом с которым найдены остатки древнего города. Исторические источники свидетельствуют о том, что в 1263 году замок куршей без боя был отдан рыцарям Ливонского ордена для сожжения. С противоположным берегом городище соединяет небольшая деревянная переправа.

Городище Опинки – имеющее особое значение населенное место древних латгальцев. На правом берегу реки Вицес обра- зовалась Чертова пещера, называемая и малым Стабурагом Лат- галии. Небольшая пещера (длина 3 м, ширина 2 м, высота 0,6 м) геологически уникальна тем, что она образовалась естественным путем в четвертичный период, сцементировавшись из ссохшегося гравия. Таких пещер в Латвии только две.

There are three large lakes at the centre of this park – Lake Dusia, Lake Metelys, and Lake Obelija. Lake Dusia has very clear and transparent water, and its southern and south-eastern beaches are popular among swimmers. The lakes and their nearby wetlands are important during the migration season of birds.

After the death of the Kalnasikšņi oak tree, which was the mightiest tree in the Gauja National Park, the mighty Kvēpene oak tree has taken over that role. It has a circumference of 6.1 m, a height of 20 m, and a crown which measures 28 x 30 m. The beautiful tree is on the right bank of the Gauja River valley and is one of the most excellent trees in Latvia. Near it is the forested Kvēpene castle hill, as is the Svētavots stream, which is reputed to have medicinal waters. To the North of the castle hill is the Rūsiņš hillock, which offers a good view of the surrounding forests, the towers of the city of Cēsis, Ieriķi, and the Rakšupe estuary at the Gauja. There is a bench at the top of the hillock from which lovely sunsets can be seen.

The road trip from Vilnius to Rīga will take you to the most beautiful and important sightseeing places of the
Forest Trail in Lithuania and its southern part in Latvia. You will start your tour with the visit of the capital city – Vilnius, then you will go to the historic resort town of Druskininkai, meandering through the town following the route of the Forest Trail. You will then visit the Dzūkija National Park, Merkinė Mound and the resort town of Birštonas, situated in the territory of Nemunas loops regional park. Further you will reach the second largest city in Lithuania – Kaunas, walking through the city along the route of the Forest Trail to finally reach the Panemunė forest. You will then walk along the beautiful banks of the river Nemunas to Vilkija, which boasts of its unique ferry service.

Next on the route is the Dubysa Regional Park, which includes the spectacular Dubysa river valley, historic churches and mounds along its banks. Be prepared, since the terrain of this area is rather rolling. Next, you will visit the town of Šiluva, which is a Catholic pilgrimage site, and then travel to the Tytuvėnai Regional Park, where you walk the natural trail of the lake of Gilius, which is part of the Forest Trail. The tour will continue in the Kurtuvėnai Regional Park, where you will walk one section of the Forest Trail from Kurtuvėnai to Šaukėnai, leading along small forest trails, educational trails, beautiful tree alleys and through wetlands. Then you will go to the region of Samogitia, visiting Telšiai and walk one of the Forest Trail sections along Lake Plateliai.

Next, the tour takes you through the stone town of Mosėdis to Latvia, where you will stop over to have a walk on one of the oldest towns in Latvia – Aizpute, enjoying its 19th century wooden architecture and the local wine brewery. Next you will take a small walk along the Forest Trail in the eye-catching Kazdanga manor park and drive on to the most beautiful town of Kurzeme – Kuldīga. At the end of the tour, you will walk a section of the Forest Trail along the Abava River Valley Nature Park and nature trails in the Ķemeri National Park.

Сырный домик, построенный в 1768 году, находится на территории имения Калнамуйжа (Смилтенское имение) и является единственным объектом индустриального наследия такого вида из сохранившихся в Латвии. На первом этаже хранили молоко и сырные котлы. На второй этаж вела лестница, которая не сохранилась. На втором этаже высушивали сыр и этому процессу способствовали проделанные отверстия в деревяных частях домика (сыр проветривался). Несмотря на то, что места отверстий уже заделаны, они все еще хороши видны. Находится рядом с развалинами Смилтенского средневекового замка. Домик в критическом состоянии! Осмотр снаружи.
