Meet the Bauska Administrative District! Or Bauska is the place where people meet. The administrative district can be seen as Latvia's metropolis for cultural tourism. Here is a place where visitors can learn about major periods of art and architecture, starting from the Middle ages. The Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Classicism and modern farms all come together into an ensemble. 10 km around Bauska you will find Latvia's most beautiful castles - the Rundāle Castle, the Bauska Castle, the Mazmežotne Estate, the Brukna Estate, the Mežotne Castle, ancient castle hills such as the Mežotne castle hill and Wine Hill. Several castles and estates are now hotels.
The region around Bauska has been Latvia's granary for a long time. The administrative district specialises in farming and product processing. It is logical that lots of companies welcome visitors to take a look at the farm or factory, taste the products or see collections of old farm equipment. The area around Bauska offers beer, wine, various kinds of cheese, sweets… and collections of antique automobiles!
The Kaucminde Homemaking School has played a role in the area of Bauska, because whole generations of the most educated and best farm ladies have been graduated there. Their fame and recipes have been handed down from generation to generation. Lithuania is nearby, and that has had an effect on culinary heritage. You will find typical dishes from Zemgale at several farms in the Bauska Administrative District.
"Home Café Days" from July 23-24 will involve five cafés that will serve foods from Zemgale and the Kaucminde school in line with the very best service traditions.
All events can be found under "Home Cafés" or on the "Map" (in Latvian).

► What are "Home Café Days"?
The yards of farms and other places that are not linked to dining and accommodations on a daily basis will turn into cafés for a day or two. Guests will be able to taste local foods to learn new flavours, as well as to enjoy an interesting cultural programme. Each farm has families and/or friends who will prepare a special offer -- flatbreads, cakes, casseroles etc. to be served with tea or coffee. Each farm will present the name of its café, and the products will be served with characteristic cultural characteristic and stories.
