This is the 11th largest Estonian island, and its central section is covered by a broadleaf forest (linden, oak, elm and other trees) that is more than 100 years old. Along the shores, the Abruka Island has meadows and small areas of wetlands. Only the northern part of the island is populated. Few tourists come to call, which means that the island is relatively untouched by humankind.

Das Museum (K. Valdemāra Straße 47) wurde 1969 in einem Gebäude der alten Seefahrtschule eröffnet, die auf die Initiative von K. Valdemārs 1864 gegründet wurde. Während der Schulexistenz haben hier mehr als 1000 Kapitäne und Steuermänner auf großer Fahrt Bildung erworben. Die Exposition des Museums macht mit der Tätigkeit der ersten lettischen Seefahrtschule, sowie mit der Geschichte des Baus der Segelschiffe an der Küste von Vidzeme in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts – am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts bekannt. Im Museumsgarten sind eine Ansammlung von den Ankern und einen Oberteil (renoviert) des seinerzeit abgetragenen Leuchtturmes von Ainaži zu sehen. |

Der Ort Tuhala ist schon seit 3000 besiedelt. Im Gebiet befinden sich 11 prähistorische Siedlungsreste, 30 Opfersteine, 3 Hügelgräbe, 4 Heiden u.a. Im Landschaftsschutzgebiet Tuhala befindet sich der unikale Hexenbrunnen, aus dem beim Hochwasser bis 100 l Wasser herauskocht, und fünf Estlands mächtigste Energiesäulen. |

Am Ufer des Sees Mooste befindet sich der Gutshof Mooste. Neben dem schönen Hauptgebäude liegt als Perle des Gutshofs Mooste einer der großzügigsten Komplexe an Nebengebäuden im historizistischen Stil in Estland. Der englische Park umgibt das Hauptgebäude, wo eine Schule untergebracht ist. In der renovierten Holzwerkstatt ist heute das Gästehaus, im ehemaligen Pferdestall befindet sich das Haus der Restauratoren, im Gutsverwaltershaus das Zentrum für Kunst und Sozialpraktikum und der ehemalige Viehstall dient heute als Konzertsaal. |

The historical route from Rīga to Liepāja via Dobele, Saldus, Skrunda, Durbe and Grobiņa was used as long ago as the 13th century. People in the Kurzeme region of Latvia have always eat sea, river and lake fish, particularly smoked fish.
