Avota ūdeni izmantojuši gan apkārtējie zemnieki, gan muižnieki, gan augstmaņi no Jelgavas. Avotā slimnieki peldējušies, aptriepušies ar dūņām, no tā sagatavotas arī siltās vannas. Tāpat ūdens tika izmantots iekšķīgai lietošanai. Bārbeles sēravots dziedinājis ne tikai skorbutu, locītavu un krustu sāpes, artrītu, pietūkumu, bet arī venēriskās slimības-sifilisu, nervu kaites un daudzas citas slimības. 19. gs. avota ūdenī samazinājās sērūdeņraža koncentrācija. Neskatoties uz to, 20. gs. 20. gados šeit vēl aizvien darbojās vannu māja, tika uzbūvēts arī neliels vasarnīcu rajons, ierīkots deju laukums un parks, kūrorts tolaik tika plaši apmeklēts. Diemžēl, kūrorta noriets seko pēc Otrā Pasaules kara, kad to noposta un vairs neatjauno. Šobrīd par savulaik tik ļoti apmeklēto un nozīmīgo kūrvietu, dēvētu par pirmo kūrortu Latvijā, var tikai iztēloties. The Krustkalni Nature Reserve was established in 1977, and the diversity of plants in the region is based both on the terrain – the Madona-Trepe embankment, a series of hillocks with low areas among them, swamps and small lakes – and on the biotope – natural meadows, forest glades, places where underground streams bubble up to the surface, and vast areas of forest with very old stands of trees. Some 800 types of plants have been defined in the reserve. It can be toured only in the company of a guide from reserve headquarters, and one must apply in advance. Visitors can visit the Krāku streams, Lake Svēte-Dreimaņi, and other sites. |

A new section of the walking trail along the sea has been built and an environmental object "Sunset watcher" has been created in Saulkrasti near the White Dune and Sunset Trail. The tower on the eastern shore of Lake Engure (next to the meadow for wild cattle, accessible from the side of Bērzciems) offers a view of the reeds, small islands, Great Island, cows and horses of the north-eastern part of the lake. The tower on the northern shore of the lake (accessible from the side of Mērsrags) offers a look at the boating facility and the very overgrown northern part of the lake. The tower at the north-western shore of the lake (accessible from the side of Ķūļciems) shows the Apaļrova island (a footpath), stands of juniper, the boating facility, and the mosaic-like landscape of the lake itself.

The viewing tower was built quite recently. At its foot is a location for relaxation. It offers a good view of one of the curves of the Daugava River – the Adamova curve. A bit beyond is the Curves of Daugava Nature Park. Along the tower is the “Saulkrasti Trail” bicycle route.

Since ancient times bread has been our staple food, and formed part of breakfast, lunch and our evening meal. We bake bread from rye, wheat, buckwheat and barley. Both fine-ground and wholemeal flour is used. Bread baking is one of the most honoured traditional skills in Latvia. Caunītes country house keeps Latvian traditions alive and demonstrates them to visitors. The house is designed and decorated in the traditional Latvian style and exudes an authentic ambience while having modern facilities. Under the guidance of the hostess, visitors will bake their own loaf of sweet-and-sour bread in a wood-fired bread oven. In Latvian families it was traditionally one of the main duties of the lady of the house to bake a week’s supply of bread for the whole family every Saturday morning. Every woman was proud of her own unique recipe and passed it down to her daughters and granddaughters through the generations. There are many traditional beliefs, sayings and riddles linked with bread in Latvian folklore. Today, there is great interest in the old recipes, bread-baking methods and the use of organic ingredients as many families are opting for a healthy lifestyle. |
