Today it seems unbelievable that just 20 years ago there were buildings on the coastline with massive projectors that were rolled onto a platform at night so as to shed light on the nearby sea and beach and to look for potential violators of the border regime. Only the buildings and the ruins of the platform are still there – they have been seriously damaged by the waves of the sea.

Located on the bank of the Gauja River in the northern part of Līgatne is the only functioning crossing point on the Gauja River and the only one in the Baltic States which is powered by the river itself. This is a public transportation resource of local importance. |

The grave of Ida Apsāne, who was known as the “moon daughter” of the great Latvian poet and playwright Rainis can be found in the old Lašu Lutheran Cemetery, which is 200 m to the North of the Lašu Lutheran Church. The text on the grave reads “Ida Marie Apsahn, b. March 23, 1867, d. April 10, 1887.” Other members of her family are also buried here. |

The first Mālpils dairy began operations in 1923 and manufactured butter and cheese. During the 1970s, the first soft and unfermented cheese in Latvia, “Mālpils Cheese” was produced here. Apply in advance for a tour of the company and a tasting of its products. You can purchase the products from the company’s warehouse. |

Cultural space of Kihnu (www.kultuuriruum.ee) is incorporated in the UNESCO list of Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, and is a quaint mix of old and modern. The local history museum displays tools, clothes, handicraft and furniture. |

You will start your hike from the popular Latvian spa town of Jūrmala. The route is great for those who like to hike along the coastline, with former fishing villages full of unique coastline charm, as well as lonely and seldom visited beaches. Many villages have small smokehouses where dried fish can be bought. Your destination is Cape Kolka, which the father of Latvia’s maritime school, Krišjānis Valdemārs, considered to be the centre of Europe. Durbe is the smallest town in Latvia with a distinguished history, as well as the smallest city in the country in terms of population (some 500 residents). Durbe was first mentioned in a Courlandian document. In 1260, there was a legendary battle at Durbe between the joint forces of the Livonian Order and the German Order and local tribes, including Courlandians who left the German forces to join the tribes. One of Latvia's first professional gardeners, Sīmanis Klevers (1834-1922) lived and worked in Durbe, and it is thanks to him that the local gardens feature many rare types of apple trees. The herald of Durbe, which was approved in 1925 features a silver apple tree. Several local farms have fruit orchards, and there are many active gardeners. An apple festival is held each September in Durbe. |

In Soviet years, Ventspils was the site of tank training. The facility has been degraded, and only the former tank repair facility and some outbuildings are still being used. The rest of the territory is not used or guarded any more.

The pub is located in a wooden log building and situated in the suburbs of Sigulda, allowing one to feel the Latvian spirit in the interior and enjoy Latvian-style dishes. The pub has maintained the traditions and quality of Latvian cuisine. This is a part of Latvia in which various manifestations related to layers of earth made up of water-soluble lime can be found. The most unusual elements here are Lake Vecezers and Lake Linezers. The water of the latter lake has flowed underground several times over the last few decades, with the remaining lake hole as much as nine metres deep. No one can fully explain how this happens. A tourist trail encircles Lake Linezers.

Farmer’s market Lõunakeskus sells locally grown Estonian produce or products made from local ingredients both for everyday life and festive occasions. Versatile products come mainly from farms in Southern Estonia, but can also be found in other Estonian regions. There is also a cosy café, where you can enjoy meals made from fresh produce from the market. |

In 1951, when it died, the pine tree had a circumference of 4.63 metres. It was the thickest pine tree in the Baltic States
This is one of the few trees with such a long history for which age has been determined by counting up circles – 370 years. All that’s left is a conserved part of the stump at the side of the road. Cross-sections of the stump are on exhibit at the Latvian Museum of Nature and the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum.
