In Aizkraukle, drive down Enerģētiķu Street to the Selonian side (there will be small “pockets” at the side of the road) to see one of the best views of the Daugava River valley, reminding us of what this fateful river was like before the power plant was built. You will see that the river has eroded the steep cliffs on the right bank. The further part of the valley is part of the Daugava Nature Park.

This is the thickest and mightiest Norwegian spruce (Picea abies) in Latvia. Its monolithic trunk, with its small holes, is unusual. The tree is in the overgrown park of the former Īve Estate, behind the ruins of the mansion.

During Soviet times, Vaiņode was the site of one of the Soviet Union’s largest military airfields in the Baltic States. During the period of Latvia’s independence, the country’s first dirigibles were based here. Eventually their hangars were dismantled and brought to Rīga, where they were used for the Rīga Central Market. They are still there today. Some of Latvia’s first gliders took off from Vaiņode. During the Soviet occupation, the airfield was home to an air defence and destroyer squadron, with 38 SU-27 “Flanker” destroyers on site. After the restoration of Latvia’s independence, the Vaiņode airfield was dismantled in part, and the big plates of concrete that covered the runways and the rest of the airfield were used to improve the Liepāja port. There are still 16 hangars at the airport, and 1,800 of the formerly 2,500 metres long runway are also still there. From Riga the tour goes through historic sea resort Jurmala to Pure Chocolate museum where you could see production and taste some. Then the tour goes to Sabile where there is small Wine Hill which history dates back to 16th century. You visit local wine producer who will show his gardens and talk about grape growing in the Latvian climate nowadays. Afterwards tasting of the seasonally available drinks. Then you visit small picturesque town Kuldiga and have some wine tasting there. Next day there are eco wine tasting at Aizpute and Durbe and then go to the city of Liepaja with lovely sandy beach, arty atmosphere and significant military heritage at Karaosta suburb. Then the route follows up the coast line. At Pavilosta you have a trip in traditional fishermen boat and at Alsunga singing and demonstration of local traditions by Suiti women. Culturally colourful community which heritage is listed in UNESCO. Then walk along the steep sea cost at Jurkalne and enjoy the best maintained port town of Ventspils. Next day there is a visit to local fishermen and see fish smoking process, then walk along Cape Kolka where the open sea meets the Riga Bay. Turning back to Riga you have a visit and tasting at wine maker in Talsi. |

This is one of few open air objects to honour the globally unique Baltic Way demonstration, during which several million residents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia joined hands in an unbroken chain that stretched from Tallinn all the way to Vilnius. The monument is at the former border crossing point at Unguriņi on the border between Latvia and Estonia, and it was installed on the 20th anniversary of the demonstration on August 23, 2009. It was designed by the metal artist Andris Dukurs. |

Saldus is mentioned in the historical documents already in 1253. Until the 13th century an ancient Cours castle Salden was located here, which is also represented in the coat of arms of the town. Around the 1341 Livonian Order built a castle near the Cours hill fort, where settlement formed. Its peak of development, like the other settlements of Courland, was during the reign of Duke Jacob 1642 – 1682. 1856 is mentioned as the year of the foundation of Saldus, when restoration of town perished during the Northern War begun. At the end of the World War II a big fights took place at the town, but town remained in German-occupied part of Latvian until the May 8, 1945. Modern Saldus attracts with its activities - town days, the music festival "Saldus Saule", as well as a variety of sightseeing objects, among which A/S 'Druvas Partika" can be mentioned, where you can watch how the ice cream is made and Saldus Food Factory, where you can taste the delicious candy "Gotina" and watch the production process. |

The Kolka lighthouse is on an artificial island which was created
between 1872 and 1875. The original lighthouse was made of wood, and
its light was first lit in June 1875. As the island settled into the sea, the
current tower was built. It began operations on July 1, 1884. Today the
lighthouse is six kilometres from Kolkasrags at the end of its sandy
shallows (back when it was built, it was just five kilometres away). The
island still has the building for the lighthouse supervisor, as well as
several outhouses. The metal lighthouse which is there now was built in
St Petersburg. It has been an automated lighthouse since 1979.

Akmens augšdaļā ir iekalts gandrīz 2 m garš un ~ 20 cm dziļš muldveida iedobums. Atrodamas ziņas, ka vēl 19. gs. vidū pie akmens ir ziedots ēdiens, monētas u.c. priekšmeti. Pie tā dedzināti ugunskuri un svinēti svētki. Teikas vēsta, ka velns muldā lējis ūdeni un gribējis mīcīt mīklu, kā arī parāvis zem akmens tuvējo māju saimnieku. |

This pyramid-shaped hillock with an observation tower at the top of it was established by the Soviet military. It is along the Ķevele-Saldus road, where the Zvārde airfield used to be located. It was used as an observation facility to co-ordinate army training manoeuvres. There is a view of the former airfield and the massive forests of the Zvārde Nature Park and nature reserve. It is an appropriate location for bird-watching. Note that there are no improvements there.

Laidze Parish Farm "Cukuriņi" is engaged in sea buckthorn cultivation. The farm covers about 10,000 sea buckthorns on an area of 6 hectares. The fields are treated with a computerized irrigation system. The owners of the grown berries both sell and process it themselves, obtaining sea buckthorn juice, oil and frozen berries. |
