A memorial to Finnish soldiers in
Klapkalnciems – five such soldiers from
World War I are buried here. The memorial
was first installed in 1929, but it was
destroyed by the Soviet authorities. It was
recreated in May 2004. The Lapmežciems
Museum features photographs and more
information about the Finnish soldiers.

From Riga the route goes to the historic Estonian sea resort and then by ferry to Muhu island. On the way there is ethnographic village of Koguva, the Liiva church and the elegant Padaste Manor. Overnight at Muhu island. 28 km cycling there juniper fields, its small fishing villages, and the magnificent Juigu cliffs, which open up a view of the other small islands in the Monzunda archipelago. Then drive to Saaremaa and stay in Kuressare, the island's capital. There the rooute covers such attractions as Kaali meteorite crater, impressive Valjala church and castle mound, Piretikivi rock and Poide church. Cycle along the Tagameisa Peninsula, up to 30 km. Driving to the ferry take a loop along Viidumae National Park with its viewing tower, Kihelkonna Church, the Odaletsi streams and nature trail and the dolomite Panga cliffs. |

The organic farm Zemturi is a 30 min drive from Kuldiga. The farm is mainly engaged in breeding rabbits and is designed as a place for children to see, learn about rabbits, birds and other pets. The hosts have created two thematic trails, one for pets and poultry and the other for trees and flowers. Sauna lovers have access to the sauna, also fishing opportunities can be used. Overnight stays with family or a small group of friends are also offered. Excursions for big and small. |

The Volkenberga Castle was built in the 13th century by the Livonian Order, and it was practically impregnable, as it was on top of Mākoņkalns hill. These were among the first fortifications in Latgale, and only fragments of the castle remain today. Architect Pēteris Blūms has said that this was a special type of fortification. Legends say that after the lord and lady of the castle died, the property was divided up among their three daughters – Roze, Lūcija and Marija. Each sister built a new castle on the land which she inherited – Roze built Rēzekne, Lūcija built Ludza, and Marija built Viļaka. A memorial plaque at the foot of Mākoņkalns hill recalls the visit which pre-war Latvian President Kārlis Ulmanis paid to Latgale in 1938. |

The Teiči Nature Reserve was established in 1982 and is one of the largest areas of moss swamps in the Baltic region. It consists of the Teiči and the Pelečāre swamps, with a variety of plants and animals, as well as adjacent territories which are under protection. The Teiči swamp is the largest nesting ground for a number of bird species, including the common crane, the whimbrel, the golden plover and the wood sandpiper. During migratory seasons, thousands of geese of various kinds are found in the area. The reserve can be toured only in the company of a guide from reserve headquarters, and one must apply in advance for such a tour. Visitors will see the pathway of footbridges on Lake Silda, as well as Siksala island, which offers a magnificent view of Latvian swampland from a viewing tower. |

This saloon is located 5 km from Madona and at the edge of a highway in the forests of Smecere – the 37th kilometre of the Pļaviņas-Gulbene road. The building in which the saloon is housed was built in the 17th century, and today it is home to a modern leisure complex made up of a three-star hotel, a saloon and cafe, and a music club. |

Laimonis and Ilga Veidemanis lived in Roja 20 or 30 years ago. They were deaf and loved to produce models of sailing ships of various sizes. This was based on a dream about the big ships of their ancestors and the wide seas upon which the couple could not sail. The models are very precise, designed with much care and love. The couple never learned the secrets of ship models, but their collection has been inherited by Laimonis’ granddaughter, who wants to display the wonderful collection and her grandfather’s careful work to the public. In Soviet times, all lighthouses were military objects. Today the lighthouse at Pape is managed by the Latvian Maritime Administration, and it can only be viewed from the outside.

A wooden church was built by local craftsmen here between 1655 and 1658. Financed by the Plater aristocratic family, it was a miniature basilica, and this is seen as one of the oldest wooden churches in Latgale. That makes it a unique cultural and historical monument. The central altar has baroque wood carvings that were produced by masters from a local sculptural school. The side altar includes a painting of Mary Magdalene from the mid-18th century. The church was moved to its present location on the right bank of the Daugava in 1698. It has been restored several times – in 1890 and 1918. The stone wall that stretches around the church dates back to the late 17th century, and the freestanding bell tower was built in the mid-19th century. It was restored in 2002. According to various sources of information, the Indrica congregation is the oldest one in Latgale. |
