Very wide territory for a nature restricted area where extensive forests and several bogs can be found. The territory is important living space for many bird species. Vasenieku bog path with observation tower is the most attractive sites of the restricted area and offers unique landscape of the bog for its visitors. Waterproof shoes are recommended for visitors as the first 500 m of the path is molded turf rampart. Information stands are significant source of information along the path. It is suggested to visit also Stikli (Glass) village where glass factory used to be. Chandelier of Stende church has been made in this factory (by memory of Inese Roze).

Dendrological plantings by Māris Linde are located in Aizpute, about 1km to the south-west of the town centre. Under trees, there is a decorative garden showing rare tree and flower cultivars. The owner shares attractive stories about the plant varieties in his garden. Visitors can buy plants and learn about the books written by Māris Linde. |

On the shore of the Daugava River, to the East of Lielupes Street and South-east of Jātnieku Street, there are the remnants of four battery positions that were blown up in their day. The batteries had 152-mm cannons, and this was part of the former system of fortifications in Rīga (see also Komētforts, the Daugavgrīva fortress, and the fortifications of Mangaļsala). The aim was to protect the city from invaders who came from the sea. From the top of the batteries you can see the Daugava and the northern segment of the manmade Krievu Island (a huge pile of sand). It does have to be said that the condition of this historical monument is quite pitiful.

The Baisogalo Estate is one of the oldest ones in Lithuania and is known as a royal castle because it once belonged to the local lord. The ornate late-Classicism buildings were built in the mid-19th century and have survived. The 12 ha landscape park dates back to the early part of the 19th century, with an alley of chestnut trees leading to the estate from the local village. The central alley that starts at the gate weaves through two curvy bodies of water with a bridge and statues of lions. Various trees behind the estate are alongside curvy and narrow pathways. On both sides of the alleys are bodies of water, and deep in the park is a pond with an island. |

This is the farm of a moderately wealthy Selonian farmer from the 19th century. It features a residential building with a mantel chimney, two granaries, a threshing barn, a sauna, a windmill, a smithy, a steam locomotive and a threshing machine. Groups will enjoy thematic programmes such as “Crafts at the Selonian Farm,” “When Honey Melts on Your Tongue,” and “A Wedding at the Selonian Farm.” |

The steep shores of Jūrkalne are one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kurzeme. The shores are up to 20 m high, washed by the waves and mostly made of sand and narrow bands of pebbles and stones. Opposite the centre of Jūrkalne is a viewing platform and a set of stairs that lead to the sea. The shore continues in the direction of Pāvilosta and Ventspils. |

The Pilkalne Estate is in a remote location on the border of Latvia and Lithuania, 5 km to the Southwest of Nereta. Lovers of history certain must visit this estate. Why? One reason is that the grain kiln of the estate, which is gradually being restored, and the grain drying stove, a few wooden parts of which have been preserved, are unique in Latvia. The stable and servants’ home have also survived and are populated today. The buildings were built in the 18th century. The owner can tell you stories about interesting aspects of this location’s history. |

The tower of St Catharine’s Church in Valka opens up a view of the “twin towns” of Valka in Latvia and Valga in Estonia. You can see the former border crossing, the St John’s Lutheran Church of Valga, and a shop in Valga which is visited by many Latvian residents. This is part of the ZBR.

One of the buildings of the Kalnmuiža Estate has an oven in which the owner bakes rye bread with seeds, sourdough bread, and bread with dried fruit. Informational tours are available, and you can take part in the baking process. You can taste the bread and buy loaves to take home with you. |

From Riga the tour goes to Sigulda where you can see the Olympic Bobsled truck, visit Sigulda medieval castle and take a cable car across to Turaida medieval Castle with beautiful views across the Gaujas Valley. There explore trails at Sliteres National Park, visit villages of Livs which is one of the smallest ethnic nations in the world, enjoy freshly smoked fish. This little tram offers a great opportunity to return to history, when small trams were found all over Latvia. Until the 1960s, there was a narrow-gauge railroad that linked shoreline fishing villages along the shores of Northern Kurzeme. Only a few remnants of the old tracks can still be found in nature, and there are only a few train stations or parts thereof. Visitors to the Ventspils Open Air Museum can take the 1.4 km Circle Line or the 3 km Mountain Line. The locomotive was built in Germany in 1916, and the museum features a station building with all of its elements. |
