Here you will learn about home-based manufacturers, farms, companies and others in Kurzeme that produce various dairy products such as milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, ice cream, etc. Begin in Tukums, which offers lots of interesting foods and beverages. Then cross the ancient Abava River valley, which is one of the most beautiful river valleys in Latvia. The route leads to Wine Hill in Sabile and then Talsi, the “city of nine hillocks.” Further on you will find Dundaga and its legendary castle, pass through large and lonely forests on your way to Ventspils, and then continue along the shore of the Baltic sea to Medze. From there, travel back into the centre of Kurzeme, through Aizpute and Kazdanga, which is known for its own castle. Visit Latvia’s first shiitake mushroom farm at Garīkas, the Milk Estate and the Milk Museum. Further on will be Saldus with its tasty treats, then Džūkste, and then back to Tukums, where we started. |

At a lovely place in the Gauja National Park in the Vaidava Parish, guests can examine ancient tools, mechanisms and household objects. Guides will talk about how these various items were used. There is a guesthouse for overnight accommodations, and there is room for tents and picnics.

The saloon is on the Rīga-Liepāja highway (A9) at the 72nd km road marker. Live music evenings are organised. Latvian cuisine: Vidzeme salad, herring with cottage cheese and soured cream, grey peas with bacon, sautéed cabbage with sausages, cabbage rolls, potato pancakes, bread soup, stacked rye bread. Special foods: “4 vēji” – pork with sauerkraut and potatoes on a hot pan. |

The company produces butter, cream, cottage cheese, cottage cheese products, yoghurt and desserts, using high-quality milk that comes from more than 100 local farms and three co-operatives. Technological processes are observed and improved during the manufacturing process so that the product retains its value in terms of taste and nutrition. Tourists are welcome, and tastings are available. This is one of five companies in Latvia that can produce “Summer Solstice” cheese as an EU guaranteed traditional product. The company’s products also have the “Green Teaspoon” quality mark. |

The church has a non-traditional design and layout: the altar is in the middle but the pulpit- above the altar. The church has also an original bell tower with a bell casted in 1634. The present wooden interior was created by the students of Riga Crafts High School. Next to the church there are ruins of the old church and the rectory where at the end of the 18th century as a tutor worked Garlieb Merkel who in Liepupe observed events used in his famous book "Latvians". |

The former name of the house was “Forstei” (Forester’s House). It was built using logs of the old Bīriņi Castle. The first owner of the building was Alexander Alexei von Pistohlkors, the baron of Bīriņi Manor. It used to be a house of the manor’s chief forester Pauls Moltrehts. The building served as the chief forester’s work place and residence, as well as the Manor’s hunting base. The building was rebuilt several times. It obtained its current appearance and also the symbolic deer antlers in 1891. During the times of the Independent State of Latvia the house obtained a Latvian name – “Meža māja” or “Forest House”. Ownership of the house has repeatedly changed. In the 1930s, the house became a recreation place for cultural professionals and artists. In 1937, the composer Alfrēds Kalniņš spent the summer in the house working on an interpretation of the score for the second staging of the first Latvian opera “Baņuta”. During the post-war period – from 1945 to 1956 – the building housed Saulkrasti Village Council, and during the times of Saulkrasti District it was the location of the People’s Education Department. Later the children’s sanatorium “Ugunskurs” was transferred from Jūrmala to this building and was renamed “Saulkrasti Children’s sanatorium”. Now the building is privately owned. |

This homestead on the banks of the Rauna River breeds various kinds of fish. During the winter, you can fish for various salmon-type fish, and in the summer you can fish for sturgeon, blue-char, tilapia and trout. You can purchase fish, and tastings are available for groups of visitors. Sillakas is approximately 3 km from Liepasmuiža. |

This is one of the most important destinations in Northern Kurzeme, offering a wealth of information about the history of the region and the shoreline, its cultural and historical values, the building of sailing ships, fishing traditions, local residents and their work and achievements. The museum was opened in 1968, and right now it has permanent exhibitions about Krišjānis Valdemārs, the Roja maritime school and the building of sailing ships in the 19th century. There is also information about the history of fish processing from the 19th century to the present day, the Liv Shore, and the Soviet contributions toward the development of the coastline. The museum features three women from Kurzeme from different historical periods – Mildiņa, who is a simple fisherman’s wife, Mrs Pauliņš from the era of sailing ship building, and Anna Petrovna from the Soviet era. The three women offer attractive information about objects that are not exhibited at the museum, also displaying the naughty sense of humour that people in Kurzeme have. (Source: Roja TIC) |

One of the oldest buildings at the Pope Estate is the old hunting castle that was built in 1653. The mansion was built in 1608 or 1620. The Neo-Gothic porch was added in 1840. The interiors of the mansion have been preserved since the 18th century and the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, including wood panelling, original decorated ceilings, a front door in the style of Classicism, and a Rococo stove. Sadly, one of the oldest buildings - the home of the estate's governor - burned down in 2018, but the rest of the estate did not suffer and retained its beauty. Visitors will be delighted about the aromatic garden of phloxes, as well as the impressive oak trees. Worth a look is the hillock behind the main building of the estate, near which there used to be a narrow-gauge railroad (the Pope Station). The other buildings cover a fairly extensive territory, and so it is worth spending a few hours to tour the village of Pope. The Pope Estate and its park are among the best-preserved estates in the area. Since March 1941, it has housed a school. Most of the trees in the park are common, but there are a few rare ones. |
