The lake is characterized by high water limpidness (very attractive for tourists) and very rare plant species for Latvia. 15.janvāra naktī Kalpaka bataljons izcīnīja pirmo kauju pie Lielauces, atvairot sarkano uzbrukumu. Tā bija pirmā nozīmīgā Kalpaka bataljona kauja, kad uzvara karavīriem deva īpaši spēcīgu morālu stimulu. 1934. gada 19. augustā pie Lielauces luterāņu baznīcas atklāja pelēkā granītā veidoto pieminekli Oskara Kalpaka bataljona pirmās kaujas vietā. Piemiņas zīme veidota pēc arhitekta P. Dreimaņa meta. Lielauces kauja notika 1919. gada naktī no 15. uz 16. janvāri starp kalpakiešu Cēsu un Virsnieku rotu no vienas puses un 2. strēlnieku pulka karavīriem. 50. gadu sākumā piemineklis tika iznīcināts, bet atjaunots 1991. gadā |

The radio telescope at Irbene was at one time used for anti-espionage purposes. There were various military units and objects in Irbene, including a military housing estate that has now been abandoned. The radio telescope is now run by the Radio Astronomy Centre of the Latvian Academy of Sciences for scientific purposes. Guided tours of the object are available.

The Švekšnos Estate and its park are among the most beautiful venues of this type in Žemaitija. Alongside the estate is an impressive park, with two segments that are linked by a wide parade staircase that is decorated with vases and offers a lovely view of the lower terrace. On an island I the central pond of the park is a statue of the goddess Diana. A colourful sundial, a vase on a pedestal, a sculpture of St Mary, and a sculpture called "Angel of Freedom" are all found in the park. Other elements, including viewing areas, pathways and gates have also been restored. |

This landscape park has survived to the present day and was installed between 1850 and 1860. On one side the territory has a boundary that is the dammed Kruoja River, and on the other side there is a fence made of fieldstones. The English park principles at that time meant that advantage was given to a natural landscape with imitations of nature. There are some 26 types of trees in the park, and some of them were introduced from various parts of the world a few centuries ago. |

This part of the Forest Trail gives an opportunity to see Setomaa or “the Land of Setos” which is inhabited by Setos – an ethnographic group with specific ancient traditions and a unique language dialect. Forest Trail hikers can visit the traditional Setos homestead and enjoy Setos cuisine. The forests of the region are especially charming in early autumn, when the ground is coloured lilac by the blooming heather. There is a good chance to pick wild mushrooms and berries. One of the most beautiful sections of this trail in Setomaa leads along the River Piusa, where the river is surrounded by sandstone outcrops. You will also visit the Piusa caves. The tour will end in Värska resort – with its sanatorium and SPA, which use the strengths of local nature: mineral water and lake mud. Värska mineral water is well known in Estonia and elsewhere. |
