The town's name in historical sources was first mentioned in 1224. In 1340 Archbishop of Riga built a stone castle at the Latgalian hill fort (now - the Lutheran Church). In 1802 (owned until 1920) Vecgulbene estate was bought by Baron G. Wolf. Manors in the surroundings of Gulbene and Vecgulbene castle substantially suffered during the Revolution in 1905 and in the further historical events. Today, there is a substantial change in the landscape, especially in the area of White Castle, where a large-scale restoration works occurred in recent years. St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church of Nagļi was built
in 1862 by landlord Nābels. Some time ago, Nagļi Church was a branch of Viļāni Church. The Bernardian
monks served there. After the closing of the cloisters in 1930s, the church was served by priests.

The church was built in the Neoromantic style between 1936 and 1939 on the basis of a design by the architect Pavlov. It was consecrated before the completion of construction, this happening in 1937. The church honours the Anguished Mother of God, and the central altar is dedicated to her. Icons in the building date back to the early 20th century, and a statue of the Fatima Mother of God is in the yard near the entrance. |

There are several large territories on either side of the Irbe River that were linked at one time by tank roads. Tank training and inspections were conducted here at one time, but now the territory has been abandoned and is slowly being reclaimed by the forest.

Located in the North of Saldus, half a kilometre from the Riga-Liepāja highway (A9). Saldus Maiznieks ltd (Saldus baker), founded in 1992, is a family business in the second generation, which produces about 2 tons of rye bread every day. Bread is made with scour and natural leaven. There are various pastries and confectionery products, garlic croutons also produced. The quality of the work is monitored by three certified journeyman bakers who are members of the Latvian Chamber of Crafts. Company offers interactive excursions through the bakery, during which the visitors can enjoy the role of a baker – they are going through the bakery and doing the jobs that match their age – sift the flour, take the bread out of the oven, form the bread loaves, and can try different ingredients of bread. The tour is led by Kristīne Kriņģele, the craftswoman of the Latvian Chamber of Crafts. The company also produces white bread, pastries and garlic toasts. Products can be purchased on spot. |

Name of Ainazi is an integral part of the Latvian maritime history. The first Naval School, which was able to learn the Latvian peasant children, was established here in 1864. Naturally - Ainazi became an important Latvian coastal shipbuilding centre and port. Economic life of the town was also facilitated by the opening of Smiltene -Valmiera-Ainazi narrow-gauge railway line in1913. Today Ainazi is a small and quiet town on the Latvian - Estonian border with a number of interesting sightseeing objects. |
