Found on the right bank of the Daugava where the little Karikste river flows into the Daugava, all that remains of the castle today is a set of ruined walls and foundations. The castle was built by the Livonian Order in 1224, and it was inhabited until the mid-17th century, when it was sacked during the Polish-Swedish war. The ruins offer a good view of the local gravel road that goes along the right bank of the river valley.

The ancient Dviete river valley information centre “Gulbji” is one of the most important information facilities in the nature park and is housed in a single family farm that is 100 years old and is typical of the historical region of Selonia. Visitors can study an exhibition that is dedicated to the park, buy products from local craftspeople and farmers, and enjoy a beverage that is made from the distillation of beaver glands. To the North and East of “Gulbji” is the Putnu island paddock (250 ha) with livestock adapted to life in the wild – Konik horses and Highlander cows. There’s a bird watching tower on the shore of Lake Skuķi, which is 500 m away. |

Kulnevskaya (Ilzeskalns) Orthodox Church was built in 1832 by Kulnevs, the landlord of Ilzenberg
(Ilzeskalns) manor house. He was also the brother of Jacob Kulnevs. The Church has an iconostasis with
icons of the 19th century. The rectangular building has semicircular niches at its sides. The members of Kulnevs
family are buried here. The place of tomb is a rare phenomenon in Orthodox churches of Latvia.

Some 200 fallow deer live in large paddocks at the park, and the largest deer sorting facility in the Baltic States is right next door. You can look at the animals from up close. The owner organises educational camps for children and offers consultations on the breeding of animals. |

Салаца с точки зрения водного туризма является интересной рекой, на которой даже в период маловодья будут радовать береговые ландшафты и объекты осмотра, а также многообразие самой реки. Для похода на лодках самыми привлекетельными будут окрестности Мазсалацы и участок Мерниеки – Вецсалаца, где на карте видны топонимы, связанные с заколами. Заколы (лат. tacis) – бывшие места ловли миноги – это та уникальность, характерная только для Салацы на участке реки ниже впадения реки Иге. В наши дни о прежнем существовании заколов свидетельствуют топонимы – Гедерту тацис, Жвигулю тацис и др. Заколы для миног строили в местах, где река самая мелкая, самая узкая, более богата островами и стремнинами, поэтому топоним «тацис» означает также самые интересные обстоятельства для сплава. Сами заколы сохранились только в нижнем течении реки у Салацгривы. Ночлег в основном на стоянках для водных туристов (в палатках). The Berķenele semi-estate is a historical monument of national importance, known as the place where the distinguished Latvian author and politician Rainis (1865-1929) spent his childhood. The house was restored in 1995, and since 1996 it has been the Rainis house in Berķenele. Rainis recorded his childhood impressions in a poetry collection called "Five Sketch Notebooks from Dagda." Today the managers of the house offer tours, creative workshops and exhibitions. Visitors can don the clothing worn by the lord and his servants. Around the house is a large orchard, featuring a programme called "Route of Apples." The house also has a lovely landscape that is interesting to see. |
