The Volkenberga Castle was built in the 13th century by the Livonian Order, and it was practically impregnable, as it was on top of Mākoņkalns hill.  These were among the first fortifications in Latgale, and only fragments of the castle remain today.  Architect Pēteris Blūms has said that this was a special type of fortification.  Legends say that after the lord and lady of the castle died, the property was divided up among their three daughters – Roze, Lūcija and Marija.  Each sister built a new castle on the land which she inherited – Roze built Rēzekne, Lūcija built Ludza, and Marija built Viļaka.  A memorial plaque at the foot of Mākoņkalns hill recalls the visit which pre-war Latvian President Kārlis Ulmanis paid to Latgale in 1938.

The environmental object “SUITI MEETING PLACE” was established during an international arts plénière in Jūrkalne, and the originator of the idea was the musician Igo.  Sculptor Ivars Miķelsons with assistants Didzis Grodzs and Juris Krafts produced the environmental object.  The idea of marking out the Suiti cultural space among Gudenieki, Alsunga and Jūrkalne in nature began in 2013, when the first Suiti meeting place was established where the Gudenieki-Ēdole and Alsunga-Basi roads cross.  The second meeting place was established the next year where the Kuldīga-Alsunga-Jūrkalne road crosses the town in the direction of Jūrkalne past the Alsunga centre.  The third Suiti meeting place was established in Jūrkalne.  The objects were established in partnership with local governments and landowners by the “Vēju sēta” association.

These meadows are of distinction because of the curvy Slampe River, which has caused a gradual recovery of damp meadows, complete with species of plants and animals that are typical of such areas.  Domestic animals adapted for life in the wild can be seen here, and a bird watching tower on the location will offer you an excellent opportunity to view them.  You can get to the meadows via a narrow corridor known as the Melnragu throat.  The gravel road will lead to a hillock called Kurgāns from which you can have an excellent view of the surrounding landscape.

Ģipka is a village that once was the site of the first maritime school in Kurzeme.  It was opened in 1869, just a few years after a similar school in Ainaži.  This was a Category 2 maritime school, which trained helmsmen for long-distance trips and captains for short-distance trips.  The school was moved to Mazirbe in 1894.  Before the maritime school, the building housed a different kind of school, and a second floor was added in 1867 specifically for the maritime school.  Today this is a residential building.  During 28 years, the school trained more than 200 professional sailors, and it was of great importance in facilitating ship building in shoreline Liv villages. National partisans commanded by Rihards Pārups were very active during World War II between Vietalva and Jaunkalsnava. The team was disbanded in 1946. The dugout is at a location that is hard to find and access. It is in the nature reserve of the Veseta Wetlands Swamp. The wood pathway that leads from the East is often hidden by reeds during the summer. During the fierce winter of 2010, the roof of the dugout collapsed, but local enthusiasts plan to reconstruct it. Alongside the dugout is a white cross inscribed with the names of the partisans who lost their lives here.
