This location is important in terms of Latvia’s history, because during the 12th and 13th century, this was the administrative and spiritual centre of the Lettigalian tribe, with the ruler of Jersika being Visvaldis. The castle stood on the shore of the Daugava at a height of 18 m, and this was a mighty castle hill. The flat part of the hill measured 100 x 75 m, and it was surrounded by a barrier and a defensive wall made of logs. People entered the castle via guarded gates beyond which there were residential and household buildings, as well as a small church. Archaeologists have found the remnants of log buildings, as well as many antiquities from the 10th to the 13th century that speak to extensive trade relations with other parts of Europe, including ancient Russia. In 1209, the forces of Bishop Albert fooled the people in the castle and sacked it and the ancient town that was around it. Visvaldis’ family was taken hostage, and so the Lettigalian ruler was forced to become a vassal of the bishop. This is one of the most outstanding areas in the entire Baltic States with active underground waterways which still, to this very day, dissolve local gypsum rock. Parts of the area collapse regularly, and there are legends about all of this. Underwater rivers, streams, the so-called Karvės (Cow) cave, etc., can be seen in the area.

This part of the Forest Trail gives an opportunity to see Setomaa or “the Land of Setos” which is inhabited by Setos – an ethnographic group with specific ancient traditions and a unique language dialect. Forest Trail hikers can visit the traditional Setos homestead and enjoy Setos cuisine. The forests of the region are especially charming in early autumn, when the ground is coloured lilac by the blooming heather. There is a good chance to pick wild mushrooms and berries. One of the most beautiful sections of this trail in Setomaa leads along the River Piusa, where the river is surrounded by sandstone outcrops. You will also visit the Piusa caves. The tour will end in Värska resort – with its sanatorium and SPA, which use the strengths of local nature: mineral water and lake mud. Värska mineral water is well known in Estonia and elsewhere. |

Located at the Lake Burtnieks southern shore, these are wetland meadows which are regularly flooded and which are important places for various birds, including the corn - crake, to nest. This is part on the environmentallyrestricted area which covers the meadows of Lake Burtnieks. |

The Miķeļbāka lighthouse was built in 1957 and is the highest one in Latvia. Standing 58 m tall, it can only be viewed from the outside. |

The watermill processes wool with equipment that is 100 years old and is used to produce handmade blankets and pillows that are stuffed with sheep wool, as well as souvenirs that can be commissioned and purchased. The watermill offers tours and fresh-baked bread. A wool pulling and wrapping machine that dates back to the 19th century and was manufactured at the Šūberts Rudītis & Co company in the 19th century is still used, as are a unique weaving apparatus from Germany and a grain mill.
Latvian cuisine: Marinated herring with vegetables, porridge, mashed potatoes a la Vidzeme (with fried onions), pancakes with jam made of Latvian berries and honey, homemade bread.
Special foods: Water pretzels and local soup with six types of fish.

This is one of the oldest open-air museums in Europe, featuring 118 old buildings from all cultural and historical regions of Latvia. You’ll be able to our farms, craftsmen’s and fishermen’s farms (including Liv ones), and a farm once owned by Russian Old Believers in Latgale. Annual celebrations are held, and educational programmes are available. Craftspeople do their work at the museum, and you can quench your thirst at the Priede saloon. |

One of the most important locations for migrating water birds in terms of rest and feeding in Latvia is the Svēte flood-land, which overflows in the spring time, along with the Svēte polder. It has been calculated that when circumstances are good, tens of thousands of birds can be seen in the area – swans, geese, corn-crakes, pintails, predatory birds, plover-type birds, etc. |

The Plunge Estate is famous because its park, which is a mixed-type park that was established during the 18th and 19th century at a holy forest that used to be a sacrificial place. The pride and joy of the park is the Thunder oak tree, a legendary weeping linden tree and an elm tree with five trunks. The lord of the state ordered the digging of seven ponds with cascades. These are linked by rock bridge sluices. The Babrungo River, which flows alongside the estate offers an outstanding landscape for the park. |

The farm makes goat’s milk cheese and other goat’s milk products. Goats, sheep, rabbits and domestic birds are bred here. You can purchase products by ordering in advance, excursions on the farm are organised during summer. |
