Most of the great tree’s mighty branches are gone, and among those that are still there, the thickest ones are held up by supports, and the tree’s hollow centre is protected against snow and rain with a little roof. This is the thickest Common Oak (Quercus robur) in Latvia and the Baltic States. Indeed, it is one of the thickest oak trees in all of Northern Europe. The tree is a gorgeous part of the surrounding landscape. There is a car park and an information stand nearby.

From the 6th century until the 8th century instead of the current Grobina the largest known Scandinavian trade and warrior colony in the Baltic States was located. Settlers from the inlands of Gotland and Sweden established their settlement at the hillock that was then located at the bank of the navigable Alande River. It is believed that the Cours Castle – Seeburg mentioned in the chronicles of the 9th century was located exactly here. After the loss of the order castle in the 13th century Grobina became the centre of the region. The most ancient construction of the city was formed around Lielā Street, as well as around Saules and Parka Streets. |

The shores of the river have some of the oldest settlements in Latvia, as well as a true wealth of different kinds of plants. The density of outstanding cultural and historical monuments is why tourists love the shores of the river. The Rīga-Daugavpils rail line offers comfortable travel between Rīga and Jēkabpils. Церковь строилась с 1909 по 1913 год. Качество красного кирпича, используемого в строительстве храма, было плохим, поэтому с 1939 года заменено около 60 000 кирпичей! Храм считается одним из самых внушительных сакральных строений Латвии. В строительстве церкви применены декоративные элементы неоготического стиля, а в интерьере - алтарь, кафедра, хоры органа, молитвенные скамейкии изготовленные в наши дни исповедальни созданы в готических формах. Орган строился в 1931 году. Храм пострадал во время Первой мировой войны и был восстановлен в 1921 году. Осмотр церкви рекомендуется проводить в сопровождении гида. |

This is an area where migrating birds seek shelter and food all around the year. Seen most often here are the red-throated and black-throated loon, the common shelduck, the long-tailed duck, the velvet scoter and the little gull. The territory is also important for the protection of reefs. It lies opposite the Dundaga, Roja and Engure administrative districts, as well as the city of Jūrmala, and it covers 132,173 hectares of territory. The marine parts of the Engure Nature Park and the Ķemeri National Park are covered.
