This battery is easiest to find if you walk on the beach, because one of its four positions is right there, rinsed by the waves of the sea. Other positions, including a telescope tower, are in the pine forest not far from the coast. The battery was installed in the 1940s, and you can see the Northern Forts from here.

Blessed Our Lady’s Birth Roman Catholic Church of Kaunata
was rebuilt in 1850 by Zuzanna Druva after the wooden building was
burned down. The church has a fabric icon „St. Elizabeth is visited by Mary”.

A diverse stand of forest that is bisected by the Vidzeme highway and the Rīga-Lugaži railroad line. This is a place where the largest endangered bird in the world – the European roller – can be found. Between one-quarter and one-fifth of the Latvian population of the crow is found here. This, too, is one of the last nesting places for the green woodpecker.

Tahkuna lighthouse is on Tahkuna peninsula in the north of the island. It was built from French cast iron parts in 1875 and is the highest in Estonia at 43 m above sea level. |

The "Pastnieka maja" restaurant is an old restored building in Old Liepāja. Legend has it that a postal carrier named Arvīds used to live there, and the building has been praised for its interior design. The menu offers an attractive look at the life of Arvīds, and it is up to you to believe or disbelieve those stories. Latvian cuisine: Cold soup, sorrel soup, oven-baked cod, catfish and plaice filet, grilled pork ribs, porridge with a bacon and onion sauce, potato pancakes, crepes, stacked rye bread. You will start your hike from the popular Latvian spa town of Jūrmala. The route is great for those who like to hike along the coastline, with former fishing villages full of unique coastline charm, as well as lonely and seldom visited beaches. Many villages have small smokehouses where dried fish can be bought. Your destination is Cape Kolka, which the father of Latvia’s maritime school, Krišjānis Valdemārs, considered to be the centre of Europe. In Ošvalki, which is between Jūrkalne and Sārnate, there is a commemorative sign, “Sail of Hope,” which commemorates Latvians who sought to cross the Baltic Sea to Sweden during the latter period of World War II in 1944 and 1945. The sign is in the dunes between the road and the sea. |

The recently renovated old brick bridge and the viewing area that is on the left bank of the Venta beyond the castle guard’s hut offers a lovely view of the widest and most impressive waterfall in Latvia – the Venta falls. It is worth visiting during the spring floods, when fish are migrating.

This location is important in terms of Latvia’s history, because during the 12th and 13th century, this was the administrative and spiritual centre of the Lettigalian tribe, with the ruler of Jersika being Visvaldis. The castle stood on the shore of the Daugava at a height of 18 m, and this was a mighty castle hill. The flat part of the hill measured 100 x 75 m, and it was surrounded by a barrier and a defensive wall made of logs. People entered the castle via guarded gates beyond which there were residential and household buildings, as well as a small church. Archaeologists have found the remnants of log buildings, as well as many antiquities from the 10th to the 13th century that speak to extensive trade relations with other parts of Europe, including ancient Russia. In 1209, the forces of Bishop Albert fooled the people in the castle and sacked it and the ancient town that was around it. Visvaldis’ family was taken hostage, and so the Lettigalian ruler was forced to become a vassal of the bishop. The castle hill is privately owned, so please contact the owner before planning a visit. |

The church was built of fieldstones between 1908 and 1925 in the Tudor Neo-Gothic style (designed by the Liepāja-based architect Stadmann). It replaced a wooden church that dated back to 1621, and its steeple offers a lovely view of lakes that surround the village of Višķi. |

This is the oldest arboretum in Latvia. It was planned by the owner of the Skrīveri Estate, Maximmilian von Sievers (1857-1919). It has to be said that before World War I, there were two times more species of plants in the park than is the case now. The plants are grouped in accordance with the geo-botanic regions of the world. There are trails in the park, and signs showing the Latvian and Latin name of each plant are there, as well. There’s a fountain which is operated from every hour on the hour from 11:00 AM until 11:00 PM from Tuesday until Sunday. On the other side of the Rīga-Daugavpils highway is the Skrīveri Forest Park with hiking trails.
