This site has a commemorative stone which speaks to Krišjānis Valdemārs’ achievements in the development of the Latvian state. This used to be the location of the Roja or Lubezere maritime school, and the home for teachers is still there. A private medical practice is in the building right now. The maritime school existed from 1873 to 1915 and was wrecked during World War I. The school trained helmsmen for short-distance trips. Tuition was free, and classes were taught in Latvian. The legendary blue hills of Šlītere have been known since ancient days, when pirates lit false campfires that led ships to run aground near Cape Kolka. The shoreline in the Slītere National Park is known as the open-air geological museum of the Baltic Sea, because the ancient shores of the Baltic ice sea, Lake Ancylus, and dunes from Littorina Sea can be seen here. These offer a fine view of the history of the Baltic Sea. The territory was historically populated by the Liv people, and their fishing villages are a cultural environment of one of the smallest ethnic minorities in the world. The route between Kolka and Mazirbe goes down the old shore road that passes through Liv villages. The Slītere National Park has one of the greatest amounts of plants in Latvia, while Cape Kolka is one of the country’s most popular bird watching sites. Бернати - самая западная точка суши Латвии. Рядом с автостоянкой установлен каменный знак скульптора Вилниса Титанса «Зеленый луч» (1998 г.). Бернатский мыс подвержен воздействию ветра и волн, поэтому здесь наблюдается вымывание морского берега. У дороги, которая из центра поселка Бернати ведет к морю, в конце дюн (имеется указатель), установлен памятный камень со словами первого Президента Латвии Яниса Чаксте, сказанными в 1924 году: «Здесь должен быть курорт». |
