Bērzes upes labajā krastā, vietā, kur tagad paceļas Dobeles pilsdrupas, jau 1. gadu tūkstotī p. m. ē. atradās zemgaļu apmetne un vēlāk – koka pils. Gandrīz simts gadus pils izturēja vairākus krustnešu uzbrukumus un aplenkumus, un tikai 1289. g., kad vācieši bija pilnībā izpostījuši apvidu un tālāka pretošanās kļuva bezcerīga, zemgaļi paši nodedzināja savu koka pili un neuzvarēti aizgāja uz Lietuvu. 700 gadus vēlāk, 1989. gadā, godinot zemgaļu cilšu piemiņu, bijušās senpilsētas vietā tika atklāta piemiņas zīme, ko veidojis mākslinieks Mārtiņš Zaurs. Akmenī iecirsts teksts: “Zini, no šīs vietas pirms 700 gadiem zemgaļi aizgāja lepni un brīvi”, kā arī dzejnieka Viļa Plūdoņa vārdi : “Mēs svešā malā ejam, bet sirds mums paliek te”. |

The tower is on one side of the range of hills known as Grantskalni (a continuation of the Blue hills of Ogre), and it offers a broad view of the Daugava River valley and the Pārogre residential district. The dendrology park that is nearby is worth a visit, because it is rich with different kinds of plants.

During the summer, meals are served on the terrace of the “Zirgu stallis” guesthouse, while during the winter, they are served alongside the fireplace in the bar. This summer terrace café is on the beach of the Preiļi park, and it offers 100% natural ice cream with berries, as well as fresh pancakes. The café is only open from Mother’s Day (May 8) until Father’s Day (September 11). Tourist groups are offered tours and tastings of cheese-based ice cream. |

In Aizkraukle, drive down Enerģētiķu Street to the Selonian side (there will be small “pockets” at the side of the road) to see one of the best views of the Daugava River valley, reminding us of what this fateful river was like before the power plant was built. You will see that the river has eroded the steep cliffs on the right bank. The further part of the valley is part of the Daugava Nature Park.

There are three large lakes at the centre of this park – Lake Dusia, Lake Metelys, and Lake Obelija. Lake Dusia has very clear and transparent water, and its southern and south-eastern beaches are popular among swimmers. The lakes and their nearby wetlands are important during the migration season of birds.

The pub is located in a wooden log building and situated in the suburbs of Sigulda, allowing one to feel the Latvian spirit in the interior and enjoy Latvian-style dishes. The highest and most beautiful wall of cliffs on Saaremaa Island (up to 21 m high), stretching along some 3 km. During strong winds from the W or NW, a part of the cliff is washed by the waves of the sea. The open face of the cliff has limestone, marls and dolomite, and there is a wealth of fossils at the base of the cliff – corals, stromatoporids, etc.
