One of the Prisoners, who was sentenced to death during World War II, in 1944, was Celmiņš (Celminsh) from the Latvian legion. In the year 1944, august he deserted the Volhova front and made his way home to Liepaja. (In Vecpils he still has relatives, and his sister still lives there today. In Liepaja they caught him and brought him to the front again, this time to the navy. Again Celmiņš deserted and the Military patron caught him again on the street in Liepaja. During the time he was in freedom Celmiņš bought a German officers uniform in the market and hid that under his street close. He was brought to the prison and shot down. His parents were sent the news of his death and the grave number. There is a cross across the road that shows where he is buried.
