Jānis Čakste (1859-1927) was Latvia’s first president (1922-1927), and he began to build a house for himself in 1924. In 1999, in honour of the 140th anniversary of the president’s birth, an exhibition was unveiled about his life, work and family. Čakste’s office can be toured, and artists from Jelgava exhibit their works at the museum, as well. |

The old Kolkasrags lighthouse is just a set of ruins right now. The
lighthouse at the tip of the horn was built in the 16th century and
renovated several times. The ruins are slowly decaying because of storms
and ice during the winter. They had been standing well away from the
shoreline once, but now are slowly disappearing under water.

Established: 1890. The Wagner Garden is located near Lake Jumprava. Its originator was Friedrich Wagner, who grew fruit trees, decorative shrubs and flowers. This garden contains one of Latvia’s oldest and best collections of foreign trees and shrubs. There are trails for perambulations in the park.

The “Aizvēji” guest house is located only 50 km from Riga and 200 m from the sandy shore of Vidzeme seaside, in a quiet and beautifully landscaped environment. This is the largest herd of alpacas (an animal from the mountainous regions of South America) in the Baltic States. You can observe the animals, listen to stories about them, and buy alpaca wool. There are plans to transfer the herd to the Vīceži Estate in the Lībagi Parish in 2014.
