Saloons, cafes and other places in small towns and the countryside which offer tasty dishes made of local products and on the basis of traditional Latvian recipes – ones which differ from region to region.

  • Special programmes are offered to visitors, with meals, stories about holiday and everyday traditions, and songs. Sometimes visitors are involved in preparing the food.
  • Menus use local names for dishes along with explanations and a discussion of the local dialect.
  • Providers of Latvian foods also use ethnographic styles for interior design, as well as dishes, furniture, textiles, etc., from local craftspeople.

The “Dzirnakmeni” saloon

The saloon is alongside the Ieriķupīte River in the centre of town. There is a nature trail to look at local waterfalls and a windmill. The saloon offers homemade baked goods.

Café PAJUMTE

Inviting and cosy café in the very heart of Alūksne, with a wide menu for different tastes. Special dishes of the Alūksne area are also served here – salad “Temple Hill”, main course “101 Steps until the Moment of Pleasure” and the dessert “Marienburg Lake Islands”. We offer business lunches and monthly specials, as well as a children's menu.

The “Ratnica” saloon

The saloon is in the restored complex of the Smuku Estate (16th century). During the summer, meals are served on the terrace of the “Zirgu stallis” guesthouse, while during the winter, they are served alongside the fireplace in the bar.

Latvian cuisine: Milk dumpling soup with dried bacon (Kurzeme lunch), herring baked on coals, stacked rye bread with whipped cream, “countryside milk bun” (fresh milk, sugar, cinnamon, berry sauce), a cheesy potato with honey-roasted pork.

Pavaru maja Ligatne

The chef's house is located in the former Līgatne Maternity Hospital "Wilhelma". It is intended as a place for chefs as well as other interested parties to do, create and experiment. The author of the idea is chef Ēriks Dreibants. The aim of this place is to encourage you to explore and discover the unique tastes and experiences of our region. The chef's house supports the slow food philosophy and the surrounding farmers and producers.

Next to the house there is a Nature Observers' Garden, where there is a playground "Nest in the Tree", a magnifying glass for a closer look at the elements of nature, and a picnic area with a fireplace. There is an herb garden in the garden, fruit trees and berry bushes have been compiled, but in the center of it, next to the Bird Watching Square, there is a Butterfly Meadow.

The “4 veji” saloon

The saloon is on the Rīga-Liepāja highway (A9) at the 72nd km road marker. Live music evenings are organised.

Latvian cuisine: Vidzeme salad, herring with cottage cheese and soured cream, grey peas with bacon, sautéed cabbage with sausages, cabbage rolls, potato pancakes, bread soup, stacked rye bread.

Special foods: “4 vēji” – pork with sauerkraut and potatoes on a hot pan.

This saloon is located 5 km from Madona and at the edge of a highway in the forests of Smecere – the 37th kilometre of the Pļaviņas-Gulbene road. The building in which the saloon is housed was built in the 17th century, and today it is home to a modern leisure complex made up of a three-star hotel, a saloon and cafe, and a music club.

The café is in the market square of Vecpiebalga, opposite the Lutheran church.  It works with local farmers and sells products from a local smokehouse. 
Latvian cuisine:  Pork crackling, potato pancakes, cold beet soup, roast pork, mutton sausages with sauerkraut, homemade sausages, pike-perch filet, crepes, Piebalga honey, cloudberry jam, strawberry soup with ice cream.

The bar is in Tirgus Square in the historical centre of Dobele, offering Latvian cuisine and Tērvete beer, which is brewed from Latvian ingredients. A summer terrace is open during the season.
