The memorial site with a 1936 monument produced by the sculptor Kārlis Zāle is located in Smārde near the Smārde-Tukums road. It commemorates 38 soldiers who fell during World War I. Between 1915 and 1917, the front line was near Smārde. Many men were killed, and they were buried at the local swamp. It was only after the war that they were reburied in Smārde, Kūdra, Ķemeri, and Sloka. |

This was Coastal Defence Battery No. 500 at one time, and it was dismantled in 1955. The tower of St Catharine’s Church in Valka opens up a view of the “twin towns” of Valka in Latvia and Valga in Estonia. You can see the former border crossing, the St John’s Lutheran Church of Valga, and a shop in Valga which is visited by many Latvian residents. This is part of the ZBR.

St Peter’s is one of the oldest historical monuments in the Baltic States, and it is also the best place from which to survey the historical centre of Rīga, which is part of the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage. You can see the central part of Old Rīga, City Hall Square, the Pārdaugava region on the opposite side of the river, and even – during clear weather – the Bay of Rīga. The tower of the church is 123 metres high, but the viewing location is at a height of 72 metres.

Historians say that Liv tribes began to settle the territory that is now Latvia in the 10th century. They lived in Northern Kurzeme, at the mouths of the Daugava and Gauja Rivers, and from Ģipka to Oviši, where seaside fishing villages of Liv origin can still be found. Coastal residents have always eaten various sea, river and lake fish dishes, including smoked sole, Baltic herring, cod, bream or eelpout, baked lampreys, salted sprats, Baltic herring and common herring. Fresh and lightly salted Baltic salmon is a delicacy. Whole fish are baked on hot coals, including pike perch, trout, carp, catfish and European perch. Guests can participate in catching and smoking fish and tastings with bits of everything is available on degustations. Rye can be tasted in rye bread and sourdough bread, carrot buns and even pancakes and gingerbread. Barley buns are common in Vidzeme, as are tasty meat and fowl dishes. There will always be a pig's snout with peas or an oven-roasted piglet on New Year's Eve. Taverns serve wild game with lingonberries, mushrooms and other wild tastes. Side dishes include autumn vegetables, pumpkin, beans or grits, as well as sinfully tasty sauces. Open landscape area within farming lands on both banks of Uzava River about 10 km before it flows into the Baltic Sea. There is a good open view over the area from the Vendzava-Ziri road going through the nature park. Protection of migratory birds and corncrakes has been one of the main reasons for establishment of the nature park. Bird watching is possible from the road Vendzava-Ziri during migration period in spring and fall. There is no tourist infrastructure in the nature park.

This is a forested island in the Bay of Finland which is the 6th largest Estonian island and is found 14 km to the N of Tallinn. Two decades ago it was a closed zone, because the Soviet Union had a highly secretive manufacturing plant for maritime mines here.

This pile of big rocks stands around 9 m high and is some kind of monument to Krišjānis Barons and his achievements on behalf of the Latvian people. His parents lived at the Valpene Estate, and the rocks contain engraved names of lost homesteads from the region. Their direction in the pyramid indicates where the homesteads used to be. The idea for the rocks came from Imants Ziedonis, and the pyramid was built by the sculptor Vilnis Titāns. |
