This park was set up to protect the landscape and cultural environment of the Haanja highland. At the central part of the park are the two highest hills in the Baltic States – Suur Munamägi, which stands 318 m above sea level, and Vällamägi, which is 304 m above sea level. The ancient Rõuge River valley (Rõuge ürgorg) is found in the western part of the park. It is 7.5 km long and up to 60 m deep. The valley dates back to the Ice Age, and it has seven lakes, including the deepest one (38 m) in Estonia – Lake Rõuge Suurjärv.

In 1944, between November 14 and December 9, there were fierce battles between SD and SS units from the German 16th Army, under the command of Police General Friedrich Jekeln, and a separate battalion of the Kurelians, under the command of Lt Roberts Rubenis. The battles were waged in the Ugāle, Usma, Renda and Zlēki parishes. Rubenis’ men were well-armed and organised. There were more than 600 troops, and the soldiers saw themselves as a national force which stood apart from the two hostile occupant regimes. This was the longest and most extensive battle in the history of Latvian national resistance. As the military force of the Latvian Central Council, the unit enjoyed extensive public support and confirmed a high level of morality in fighting for the restoration of a democratic Latvia. This tour will surprise you with the diversity and unusual products of farms. You will visit several farms that offer ecological produce that can be tasted and purchased. From Vilnius, you will travel to an ecological goat farm that offers 60 types of cheeses made of goat milk. Next you will visit an ethnographic Lithuanian farm that breeds horses and sheep. You will spent a day in Kaunas to visit the Nemuna River valley, as well as the Raudone and Panemune castles. A picnic at a farm with acorn coffee, pancaked baked on a campfire and soup made of locally picked wild mushrooms. The ecological Buivydai farm breeds cattle and grows blackberries. Along the way you will visit the Courlandian Dune, the Sea Museum and Delphinarium and the most popular spa town in the dunes, Nida. From there you will drive to Latvia, where the Pape Nature Park offers a look at wild horses, and the ethnographic Ķoņi village is an old seashore fishermen's village. In Liepāja, it will be worth visiting the local market, which is more than 100 years old and offers seasonal vegetables, fruit, greens and flowers from local farms. Next you will visit an environmentally friendly farm that has 130 different types of apples and a wine operation that prepares wines from local fruits and berries. The farm uses biodynamic farming principles to grow beans and peas, as well as to breed livestock so as to produce tasty sausages. Next you will visit the lovely Medieval town of Kuldīga and its brick bridge across the Venta River. An environmental health farm will allow you to enjoy herbal teas and learn about various ecological cosmetics made of plants from the clean environment. Along the way you will enjoy the landscape of the ancient Abava River Valley and visit the Sabile wine hill where grapes are grown to produce local wines. Next you will visit the charming small town of Talsi, where you will find the Latvian Agriculture Museum. The tour will conclude at a farm which grows fruits and vegetables and offers syrups, jams and canned vegetables. You will complete you tour in Rīga. |

This was an island after the Rīga hydroelectric power plant created a reservoir, and before that it was a peninsula on the Left Bank of the Daugava. During World War I, there were massive battles between Latvian Riflemen and a much larger German army on Death Island. On December 25, 1916, the Germans used poisonous gas against the Latvian troops. In honour of this, the architect Eižens Laube designed a monument to fallen Latvian riflemen on the northern shore of Death Island. It was unveiled in 1924. Death Island can be reached by boat, and the trenches and graves there are of interest. There is a pier for boats on the north-western shore of the island, and nearby is a location for leisure. Some of the trenches and dugouts have recently been restored. The battles were described by Aleksandrs Grīns in his masterpiece, “Snowstorm of Souls.” |

The Markova information trail is the most diverse and impressive trails along the upper reaches of the Daugava river in terms of objects and landscapes. The visitor will go to the top of the Markova castle hill, which offers a great view of the river valley. The deep Putāni stream valley will be crossed to get to the cliffs on the right bank of the Daugava. Here, the visitor will see one of the most unusual landscapes of Latvia’s river valleys. There is the Slutišķi village of Old Believers, along with the mighty Slutišķi cliff in the background. The trail is 1.6km long, and it will take an hour or two, particularly if the visitor chooses to tour the village and the homes of the Old Believers.

Autumn is a peak bird migration time when huge flocks frequently cross the sky above your head. Cranes perform impressive displays in the fields. There are still some dragonflies and butterflies to see, plus wild animals including wild boar, deer and beaver. The landscape acquires its beautiful autumn colours while we people can enjoy oursleves gathering the wild autumn harvest - mushrooms, cranberries, cowberries and much more. From Riga the tour goes along the Vidzeme sea coast with areas of Devonian sandstone, coastal meadows and numerous places to watching wading birds. At Salacgriva you visit the traditonal lamprey weirs and can taste them grilled. The tour goes to Seda bog, which is an important nesting site for water birds. Here you might see several types of geese, swans and cranes as well as some mammals and dragonflies. Then the route goes to natural coniferous forests at Mežole with great biological diversity. Next the tour focuses on mushrooms and berries in the Gauja National Park which also provides great views of the river valley with some steep Devonian banks with several medieval castles and manors perched on top. Then the tour goes back to Riga and on to two important national parks. Ķemeri National Park has a Black Alder trail through wet forest, ideal for spotting woodpeckers. In contrast the Big Heath trail passes though a landscape of raised and transit bog and sulphurous springs. At Slītere National Park you have a wildlife day visiting a beaver lodge, tracking variousforestanimals and possibly seeing some of them. Cape Kolka offers excellent costal migration action. The tour goes along the steep sea coast of Jurkalne, stops at Ventspils town for lunch with a bracing walk along its breakwater, then turns inland towards Riga. On the way there are stops at the Abava ancient valley and Sabile wine hill. |
