The farm has a herd of horses and buys horses which confirm to historical demands related to breeds of animals. You can learn to ride a horse in the company of an instructor and in a limited area. The conservatories of the botanic gardens contain various exotic and tropical plants and fruit trees, including lemon, banana, pineapple, fig, olive, avocado and coffee bean plants. There is a broad collection of cacti, as well as the largest collection of palm trees in Latvia. Outdoors, there are lots of winter-resistant plants, medicinal plants, and poisonous plants. The plants are arranged in systematic groups – something which is typical only of the botanic gardens of universities. This is the only place in Latvia where you can see so many flowering magnolias in a single place in the spring.
Outdoors you will find the Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa), the Gingko (Ginkgo biloba), the Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), the White Mulberry (Morus alba), and the Common Walnut (Juglans regia). The conservatories include several types of the highland tamarin (Araucaria bidwillii and A. heterophylla), the Wollemia Pine (Wollemia nobilis), the Moreton Bay Fig (Ficus macrophlla), the Water Lily (Victoria regia), etc.

The memorial museum for Edvards Veidenbaums (1867-1892) was established at his homestead, “Kalači.” The great poet and translator lived there from the age of five and also died there. Alongside the museum is an exhibition hall that offers thematic exhibitions. A monument designed by the sculptor Laimonis Blumbergs is in the garden of the museum and was installed in 1961. There is also a granary in which Veidenbaums lived during the summer. The poet was buried in the local Liepa cemetery. |

The restored mansion of the Dunte Estate is now a museum featuring the adventures and life of the legendary king of lies, Baron Munchhausen. The first floor is devoted to the barn and his stories, while the second floor has a collection of wax models of people who are distinguished in terms of Latvia’s history. Also there is the largest collection of beer mugs in Latvia. There are three circular trails in the forest with wooden sculptures. The longest one leads to the sea. A wooden model of a ship is interesting to children. |

The Svene Nature Park is in the central part of the Augšzeme highlands, and Lake Svente is at its centre. This is one of the cleanest lakes in Latvia. There is also Egļukalns Hill, which offers one of the most beautiful views in all of Zemgale from its viewing tower. Visitors can gaze at the hillocks and lakes of the Svente area. Egļukalns Hill also has ski trails and a nature trail. |

This territory is around 9 square kilometres in size and is found to the North of the village of Kūdra, where the so-called old peat quarries are found. Peat was extracted here during the first period of Latvian independence. Today the territory is overgrown, preserving the old and flooded quarries which offer a very unusual landscape. The best way to examine them is on foot or bike, taking the road from the Kūdra railroad station which leads to Lake Sloka. |

Here you will learn about home-based manufacturers, farms, companies and others in northern Vidzeme that produce various dairy products such as milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, ice cream, etc. You’ll start out in Cēsis with its Medieval old town, castle ruins, St John’s Lutheran Church and other destinations. Wind your way through the Gauja National Park (Ungurmuiža, Lake Ungurs, the Medieval castle and church at Straupe). You’ll hit the seashore at Saulkrasti and then drive along it to Tūja, where you will turn inland again. In Limbaži you will find Medieval castle ruins, a monument to the great folklorist Krišjānis Barons and other objects. Drive on to Valmiera (St Simon’s Church, castle ruins, a museum, Emotion Park, etc.), Rūjiena and Naukšēni (the Naukšēni Estate). Along the “Northern Pathway” you will reach Kārķi and then Smiltene and legendary Rauna (the Raunas Staburags cliff) before returning to your starting point. |

This is one of the most important destinations in Northern Kurzeme, offering a wealth of information about the history of the region and the shoreline, its cultural and historical values, the building of sailing ships, fishing traditions, local residents and their work and achievements. The museum was opened in 1968, and right now it has permanent exhibitions about Krišjānis Valdemārs, the Roja maritime school and the building of sailing ships in the 19th century. There is also information about the history of fish processing from the 19th century to the present day, the Liv Shore, and the Soviet contributions toward the development of the coastline. The museum features three women from Kurzeme from different historical periods – Mildiņa, who is a simple fisherman’s wife, Mrs Pauliņš from the era of sailing ship building, and Anna Petrovna from the Soviet era. This part of the Forest Trail gives an opportunity to see Setomaa or “the Land of Setos” which is inhabited by Setos – an ethnographic group with specific ancient traditions and a unique language dialect. Forest Trail hikers can visit the traditional Setos homestead and enjoy Setos cuisine. The forests of the region are especially charming in early autumn, when the ground is coloured lilac by the blooming heather. There is a good chance to pick wild mushrooms and berries. One of the most beautiful sections of this trail in Setomaa leads along the River Piusa, where the river is surrounded by sandstone outcrops. You will also visit the Piusa caves. The tour will end in Värska resort – with its sanatorium and SPA, which use the strengths of local nature: mineral water and lake mud. Värska mineral water is well known in Estonia and elsewhere. |

These are beautiful and impressive views, particularly early in the morning, of the historical locations of Alūksne. Go to Templis Hill, the Aleksandrs Pavilion, the obelisk which commemorates Heinrich von Fittinghoff, and the memorial to soldiers of the No. 7 Sigulda Brigade for good views. The Templis Hill, the castle ruins, the estate and the pavilions are arhitectural monuments.

Ventspils is one of the most affluent towns with excellent infrastructure, well- restored Livonian Order Castle, promenade, arty fountains, manicured parks. Whole town is family oriented but kids particularly enjoy the Blue Flag beach with different swings, climbing and sliding options as well as Kids Town with activity zones for different age groups. A short trip by the narrow-gauge steam engine is a special attraction for kids as well as adults. Water pleasures can be fully enjoyed at indoor or outdoor aqua parks. Go for self-drive excursions in vicinity featuring scenic sea coast, traditional fishing villages where smoked fish can be bought from fishermen, Slitere National Park with beautiful view from its lighthouse, charming Kuldiga with its wooden architecture and waterfall. On the way back to Riga, adults might enjoy stop at the home winery to taste excellent wines made from everything else but grapes.
