This, the third church at this location, was built in 1906 at the initiative of and financing from Gotthard von Budberg, who dedicated it to his late wife, Gertrude. The Walker company organ in the church was built in 1906 in Ludwigsburg in Southern Germany. In 1992, a memorial plaque to commemorate people from Gārsene who were repressed by the Soviet regime was consecrated at the church. 100 m to the East is a cemetery where we see the legendary chapel of the Budberg dynasty, as well as the graves of the noblemen. The church is open to visitors. |

This is one of two crossing points across the Daugava (the other is near Līvāni). It is an exotic form of transportation to carry pedestrians, bicyclists and light automobiles across the river. There is a motor that operates a 200-metre metal cable. The crossing point is based on Soviet military pontoons that were used to build pontoon bridges for tanks. The crossing point was established by its owners. The Dunava Catholic Church is on the left bank of the river, and nearby is a monument to rafters. During the 1820s, there were three crossing points of this type across the Daugava. |

The facility had a central tower and six perimeter towers, each more than 200 metres high. Some of the towers remain in place and are used for mobile communications. It is rumoured that the Soviet communications system was never once turned on. The complex at Upīškalns can be seen by driving down the Skrunda-Kuldīga road. This is one of the greatest waterfalls in the Baltic States – 8 m high and up to 70 m wide. It is most impressive in the spring and after strong rains. The waterfall and its ~300 m canyon emerged from the limestone of the Ordovician Period. You may spot some fossils there. When the water is low, courageous people try to ford the river both above and below the waterfall. The limestone and the falling water have established a unique “tunnel” there.
