The Daugava is the largest river in Latvia and the river of destiny for the Latvian people. Since the end of the Ice Age, plants and animals travelled into what is now Latvia along the Daugava River valley, followed then by humans. The shores of the river have some of the oldest settlements in Latvia, as well as a true wealth of different kinds of plants. The density of outstanding cultural and historical monuments is why tourists love the shores of the river. The Rīga-Daugavpils rail line offers comfortable travel between Rīga and Jēkabpils. This is a unique example of industrial heritage – the only open munition factory in the Baltic States. It includes Europe’s oldest pellet pouring tower, and it is still used for that purpose today. Tours are available for those who contact the factory in advance, and a guide will lead groups through the factory, the tower and the museum. Today the factory manufactures nine types of bullets for smooth-barrel weapons, as well as bullets for pneumatic weapons. The products are exported to Germany and other countries. |

Svētkalnā atradusies krustnešu nocietinātā pils. Zemgaļiem to nebija pa spēkam ieņemt, tādēļ, nodedzinādami savu pili Tērvetes pilskalnā (1286. g.), tie aizgāja uz Raktes (Žagares) novadu Lietuvā. Kad Svētkalna nocietinājumi bija zaudējusi savu militāro nozīmi, krustneši to nojauca. 1701. g. Ziemeļu kara laikā Svētkalnā atradās zviedru armijas nocietinātā apmetne, no kā arī cēlies vietvārds. The Pape airfield was used for arms training in Soviet times, with bombs being dropped on specific targets. The facility is owned by the regional local government and is not used. There are sunken ships and targets in the sea.

The present wooden church on the hill was built in 1947 but today it has been restored. Currently, the deanery of Rezekne is located there. Every day you can see it from the outside. Until 1960, in Dukstigals there were two congregations: White Dukstigals (Šadurska) and Black Dukstigal (Slobodska). In White Dukstigals, the church was built in 1775. In 1960, during the time of the Soviet power, the church was violently demolished, despite the fact that it was an architectural monument and the oldest wooden church in Latgale-367years old! The "excuse" was the explanation that one congregation must not have two churches. |

monument. The church has a promiment „St. Mary Magdalene beside the Cross of Jesus” and three big
altars. The wooden log building was constructed in 1780. It was sanctified in 1782.

The history of Līgatne cannot be separated from the paper factory which was once the only factory of its kind in Latvia. Tours are available in the company of a guide. During the late 19th and early 20th century, the company built homes, a school, a birthing centre, a hospital, a club, a guesthouse and other buildings for its employees, and most of these buildings have survived to this day. There are more than 200 interesting underground passageways which are still used as warehouses for various items, including vegetables. |
