Territory established mainly for protection of bog myrtle and various bird species. An interesting fact is that bog myrtle or sweet gale is used as ingredient for making famous Riga Black Balsam. Brienamais purvs (wade bog) is hard to find and reach therefore it is not suitable for tourism.

Напротив острова Марияс (Пилссала) возвышается обрывистая (склоны искусственно сделаны более крутыми) гора Темпля высотой примерно 30 м – древнее латгальское городище с боковыми оврагами. На городище ~ 80 м длиной и 40 м шириной различимы несколько искусственно созданных валов. Одним из древнейших свидетельств заселенности окрестностей горы Темпля является найденный топор, датируемый концом 3-го – началом 2-го тысячелетия до н. э. Археологи полагают, что в это время люди жили на острове Пилссала. В 10–11 веках на городище находился латгальский замок, который в 1225-м году разрушили крестоносцы. Поверхность городища изменена сравнительно недавно – в 1807-м году, во время строительства гранитной ротонды. Ротонда построена в честь русского фельдмаршала Шереметева и капитана шведской армии Вульфа. Вид с горы Темпля на Алуксненское озеро и город считается одним из красивейших в Видземе! Заслуживает внимания и Солнечный мост, построенный в 1937-м году, а также находящаяся недалеко от горы Темпля деревянная обзорная вышка.

This is one of the highest points among the hillocks of the Selonian area of Zemgale – Borīškalns Hill. From the tower, you will see Lake Sauka, as well as the forests and farmland which surround it. The “Kalna Ļūdāni” farm is nearby, and its owner uses his livestock to help to maintain the surrounding landscape.

The area known as the territory of high hillocks has several heights – Lakta Hill (250 metres above sea level), Egļu Hill (268 metres above sea level), and Bākūži Hill (272 metres above sea level). They are connected by an earthen road – it’s worth hiking the trail to find the best viewing areas. A very fine view of the backs of hillocks in the Vidzeme highlands can be seen from the northern side of Lakta Hill.

Approximately one kilometre to the west of the former Vārnava school, you will find the Rudzīši homestead, which is owned by Ēvalds Pūpols and his family.  Ēvalds has spent most of his life cultivating grapes and developing new varieties thereof.  On the hilly territory, he has established a beautiful and well-tended area to grow grapes that love warmth.  The vineyard has approximately 60 types of grapes.  Facing south-east, this is one of Latvia's largest and most diverse vineyards.  There are many trails to learn about the garden and its beautiful surrounding area.  The owner will offer guide services, and you can learn all about the growing and selection of grapes.  You can purchase plants, and if the season has been productive, you can taste the grapes as such.  Rudzīši hosts a harvest festival and other events.

The River Pēterupe (46 km long) in its lower reaches flows by the sea, and it is one of the longest parts of the river along the picturesque coastline. In the past the River Pēterupe had several names: Pērļupe, Tarupe, Tara (in Livonian: the River of God or the Holy River). The historic area of Saulkrasti – Pēterupe Village was located on the right bank of the River Pēterupe.
