Das ist eine der eindrucksvollsten und großflächigsten natürlichen Strukturen seiner Art in Lettland hinsichtlich Erscheinung und Landschaft. Die Eiszeit hinterließ dieses mauerartige Terrain, das bis zu 27 m hoch ist. Oben drauf wurde die Straße Rīga-Ērgļi gebaut. Die Großen Kangari – Berge bieten eine Aussicht auf den Großen Kangari – See und die Großen Kangari – Sümpfe und – Teiche. Der Ķoderi – Burgberg, auch als das “Bett des großen Mannes” bekannt, befindet sich auch hier. Das Schutzgebiet wurde errichtet, um die Struktur und seine zugehörigen Biotope und Pflanzen zu schützen.

Nebenan befindet sich die Brauerei von Smiltene, wo Zider hergestellt wird, darum können Gäste diesen Apfelwein und auch einen Hauswein verkosten, der aus einheimischen Beeren hergestellt ist.

Die vom Bildhauer Kārļis Zemdega errichtete Skulptur „Madonna Orans” wurde 1936 zum Andenken an die ertrunkene Lehrerin der Gemeindeschule Jūlija Skujiņa (24 Jahre alt) aufgestellt. Es gibt verschiedene Legenden über die Anlässe des Todes. Eine der Legenden ist mit einer unglücklichen Liebe zum Pastor Roberts Slokenbergs verbunden.

1935. gadā Tūjā darbojās ķieģeļu ceplis, kas ražošanā izmantoja apkārtnē esošās Devona perioda mālu iegulas. 1936. gadā uzsāka jaunās fabrikas celtniecību. Šeit ražoja arī augstas kvalitātes ķieģeļus, ar kuriem tika apšūts arī Rīgas Pulvertornis. Tagad fabrikas vietā ir pamests grausts, kas redzams no Tūjas centra, ejot jūras virzienā.

Before its flooding, the canyon of the Daugava River between Pļaviņas and Koknese was one of the most outstanding and beautiful parts of the Baltic terrain, and Oliņkalns hill was one of the largest castle hills in Latvia.  The Andrejs cliff as up to 20 metres high, and it was part of the Daugava canyon.  Before the area was flooded because of the construction of the Pļaviņas hydroelectric power plant, there were rapids near the hill that made it hard for rafters to sail down the river.  Today it is a small island in the reservoir of the plant (it can be seen from the side of the Rīga-Daugavpils highway (A6) opposite Stukmaņi).  It is separated from the shore by 300 metres of river, under which the Dūņas valley is now resting.  A small part of the ramparts of the castle hill can still be seen on the island along with the ruins of an open-air stage and a few metres of the dolomite cliff that have remained above water.  It is thought that the Alene castle was on the hill in the 13th century.  Latvian mountain climbers installed a memorial stone in 1998 opposite Oliņkalns hill.

Here you will learn about home-based manufacturers, farms, companies and others in northern Vidzeme that produce various dairy products such as milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, ice cream, etc.  You’ll start out in Cēsis with its Medieval old town, castle ruins, St John’s Lutheran Church and other destinations.  Wind your way through the Gauja National Park (Ungurmuiža, Lake Ungurs, the Medieval castle and church at Straupe).  You’ll hit the seashore at Saulkrasti and then drive along it to Tūja, where you will turn inland again.  In Limbaži you will find Medieval castle ruins, a monument to the great folklorist Krišjānis Barons and other objects.  Drive on to Valmiera (St Simon’s Church, castle ruins, a museum, Emotion Park, etc.), Rūjiena and Naukšēni (the Naukšēni Estate).  Along the “Northern Pathway” you will reach Kārķi and then Smiltene and legendary Rauna (the Raunas Staburags cliff) before returning to your starting point.

Die Kalkschlucht, die enstand, als sich der Baltische Eissee zurückzog wird von einem mächtigen Strom durchzogen – dem Mežmuiža. Sein Wasser enthält eine hohe Konzentration an Kalkstein. Das Wasser des Flusses fliesst in einen Mühlteich, der eine sehr interessante Farbe hat. Der Bildhauer Teodors Zaļkalns hat hier einst in der Kalksintermühle gelebt, die neben dem Teich steht. Waldpfade wurden für Besucher des Stromes eingerichtet.
