Duke Jacob of the Duchy of Kurzeme and Zemgale was on the throne from 1642 until 1862, and during that time the duchy rapidly expanded ship building operations, opened the first factories and improved agricultural output.  Jacob's ships plied the seas to export goods, to establish colonies in Tobago and Gambia, and to bring sugar, coffee and spices back to Europe.  This was the age when potatoes first appeared in Latvia, though it took a couple of centuries for them become beloved.
A great delicacy in Kurzeme is lamprey from the Usma River.  It is served in soups, baked or smoked.  During the season, there will be dishes of garfish, smelt or Baltic herring, while sprats, herring and salmon are available year-round.  Rye is used for rye bread, sourdough bread or carrot buns, and barley is used for various porridges.  Local ladies will be happy to teach you how to prepare local dishes.
During the Summer Solstice, a special cheese is almost universal, while on a daily basis, there are other tasty cheeses from cow and goat milk.  Local meat and fowl dishes are popular, sometimes potted in clay pots together with vegetables.  Side dishes include pumpkin, vegetables, root vegetables, mushrooms, beans or grits with sinfully tasty sauces. Taverns will offer wild game during the hunting season, including venison, beaver and rabbit.
Those with a sweet tooth will enjoy pie, honey cakes and poppy seed pastries that are still prepared according to a Medieval recipe.  For dessert, have some blackberry dumplings or a dessert made of rye bread, honey, lingonberries or cranberries, and sweet cream.  Slake your thirst with aromatic herbal teas with honey.  Enjoy homemade wine, tasty beer or a glass of something stronger.

Das in dunklen Tönen gestrichene Gebäude wird  im 17. Jh. erstmalig in Dokumenten erwähnt,  in dessen Keller befand sich das erste Gefängnis der Stadt. Der historische Ratsplatz daneben war der wichtigste Treffpunkt und auch Strafvollzugsplatz, denn in der südöstlichen Ecke des Platzes gab es einen Pranger. Heute befindet sich hier das Touristeninformationszentrum und eine Weberwerkstadt. Hier kann man in Kurzeme hergestellte Waren und Souveniere erwerben, in der Werkstatt bei der Webearbeit zusehen. 

Auf den Feldern der Wirtschaft weiden mehr als 150 Schafe. Hier ist eine Station zur Mästung von Zuchtböcken gebaut worden. Hier werden Tierauktionen und Schaftage organisiert. Der Wirt leitet Führungen und bietet Zuchtschafe und Schafproduktion zum Verkauf.

Gäste werden herzlich erwartet in die im Jahr 1887 erbaute Riegenstube Ketta. Erfahren sie mehr über die  die Schmiedarbeit und wie macht man Holzkohle, was ist eine Riegenstube, wie heizt man Riegenofen, was ist Dreschen und Absieben.

Der 1,2 km lange Verschlungener Pfad – Dünenbiotope der Halbinsel von Nordkurland, Landschaften der Ostseeküste, hunderte Jahre alte Kiefern im Dünensand, die häufig an Minituren von Urbäumen erinnern. Am Pfad  neben dem ehemaligen Schießstand (auf dem ehemaligen sowjetischen Militärgelände) ist ein Aussichtsturm erbaut worden. 

Die Küstenbildungen des alten Ostseestadiums – Littorina-Meer treten in Natur als eine nicht große und flache Steilküste auf, die sich etwa vor 4500 – 5000 Jahren bildete. Ein Material der Küstenablagerungen – Geröll und Kies beinhalten ein für das Littorina-Meer kennzeichnendes reichstes Komplex der Faunareste. Am Besten ist der alte Meeres-Steilhang bei dem Hof “Dobeļi” in Kaltene zu beobachten. Der Steilhang der alten Küste in Kaltene ist einer der wenigen Abschnitte an der Küste der Rigaer Bucht, wo während des Littorina-Meeres eine Abrasionsküste war. The trail tells about grey dunes which have survived thanks to the border restrictions and the presence of military. The trail starts from the parking place at the mouth of the Užava river. It is one of the few natural rivermouths in Europe. One can also see the „tacis”, an industrial installation for lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis) fishing during their spawning migration period. The 3km long trail is circular. It winds for 1.5km from the Užava rivermouth to the North, along the coastline (the beach is covered with sand and pebbles), and returns to the starting point by a gravel road through grey dunes. Along the trail, one can observe a distinct white dune with rare plant species Linaria loeselii, Lathyrus maritimus, Anthyllis arenaria, Tragopogon heterospermus. About 1km from the rivermouth, in the sea, one can see a wrack of a sailing ship (parts of frame). The visibility depends on the flow of sand in the sea. The way back opens a beautiful view of the range of grey dunes. Unfortunately, Scots Pine starts taking over the area. There are three important biotopes of EU significance: „Fixed dunes with herbaceous vegetation 2130”, „Decalcified fixed dunes with Empetrum nigrum 2140” and „Dunes with Salix arenaria 2170”, forming a unique mosaic. Typical species here: mountain Alison ‘(Alyssum gmelinii), Pasqueflower (Pulsatilla pratensis), Sand Pink (Dianthus arenarius), Rosemary Leaved Willow (Salix rosmarinifolia), Dark Red Helleborine (Epipactis atrorubens), Kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylus uva-ursi).

As a former military site, some military constructions can be seen here like horseshoe-shaped sand ramparts by the road in gray dunes. They were built to disguise military vehicles in case of sea attack. By the Kangroti graveyard, towards the Užava river, there is an underground pillbox. It is a one-man fortification to fire along the coastal perimeter.
