Skiing

These homes are located near well equipped ski hills and cross country skiing trails. Many of them also offer skating on backyard pond, riding in a horse drawn sleigh, or skidooing, sledding or tobaggoing and even ice-fishing. Supper and a sauna are also possible.

What do you need to know about skiing in the Baltics?
The first snow in the Baltic States arrives in November, but the real skiing season begins only around Christmas time and lasts till the end of March. The average temperature in winter is -2C0 with January being the coldest month. The heaviest snowfall in the Baltics occurs in southern Estonia and northeastern Latvia – and that’s where the most popular ski hills are located. These hills have well groomed ski runs of varying difficulty, tows, night lighting and snow-making equipment. Cafes or snack bars and equipment rental shops where you can rent skiis, boots, snowboards and other gear are nearby.

In the middle of Daugavpils, Rēzekne, Krāslava and Preiļi, near Ciritis lake are  13 camping cottages with shower/WC.  Country sauna with fireplace for 30 people.  Sauna specialist available (order in advance).  Room for trailers, tents.  Swing-sets and an obstacle course for children.  Sports equipment available. A country farmstead in vicinity of Valdeķi. A room for guests in the hosts' home. Guests can see farm animals. Country sauna with birch and juniper besoms, herb teas. Volley-ball grounds, 10 tent places.

The owners have a large collection of old-time tools and can talk about how they were used at the farm. Families with children can help to take care of livestock in the evening (feed the animals, milk a goat, etc.)

The Kalnmuizas Castle

Kalnmuiza (Hohenberg) is a renovated castle of the Livonian Order which was built in the 15th century. In the 18-19th centuries the owners of the castle were the noble kin of Fon Bruken – Fok (von Brucken, genannt Fock), and during their rule the castle was constantly developing, a new owner mansion was built, as well as a variety of outhouses. The coat of arms of this kin has been preserved till nowadays. The castle is situated in an especially preserved territory of the ancient valley of the river Abava, next to a small river Amula. It is very popular with the tourists, and is situated in the proximity of various historical sights and places. It offers accommodation in single and double rooms, tent sites, event facilities.
