Because we Latvians eat so many potatoes, why not celebrate the potato harvest?  Country Traveller has joined with the Latvian Association of Potato Growers and Processors and the Kalnciema Street Block to organize a Potato Festival!

The County Traveller information tent will be an embassy for the countryside.  Here you will be able to find the best places to find the widest variety of countryside goodies, from potatoes to grapes. The Putni folklore group will bring music to the celebration, and later the women of Rucava will demonstrate their song skills.  After that, potato growers will take the stage to share in their wisdom – which types of potatoes are best for crispy potato pancakes, which ones are most productive, which ones are in the greatest demand, which ones should be bought, which ones should be planted, etc. Ēriks Dreibants from the Trīs Pavāru Restaurant will offer a master’s class on using modern recipes to cook potatoes. Sandra Aigara from the “Zvanītāji” traditions centre and the women from Rucava will get busy with traditional dishes such as Kurzeme soured soup, potato packets with creamy bacon sauce, and crispy potato pancakes with bacon. You will learn many interesting facts about potatoes. There will be potato relay races and competitions.

For mushroom enthusiasts' groups we have prepared the mushroom exploring trips for one week or longer here.

Midsummer Solstice Celebrations (Jāņi) is the biggest celebration in Latvia which roots goes deep in ancient times. It is wildly celebrated and many pre-events take place few days before 23-24 June (when it is always celbrated) Some events are more traditional than the others. In our list - we have put only few events wich will give you traditional feel of Jāņi and activities surroounded with it.

У нас есть Берег ливов, Суйтский край, Нижнее Курземе, Селия, Пиебалга – каждый со своими традициями, характерными блюдами, разным языком и наречием. «Лауку целётайс» предлагает восемь этномаршрутов или экспедиций.  Для тех, кто путешествует индивидуально, описания маршрутов предоставят всю необходимую информацию: о достопримечательностях, расстоянии, даже о дорожном покрытии, об альтернативах маршрута, а также контактную информацию о местах ночлега, общественного питания и гидах. Те, кто путешествуют в группах, в каждом крае могут принять участие в специальной программе, отведать традиционные блюда, послушать песни, поучаствовать в традициях: например, на Берегу ливов приглашаем за стол «Угощений  во дворе рыбака», в Суйтском крае – в корчму «Спелманю крогс» с летним камином и суйтской кухней, в Нижнем Курземе в Руцавских «Званитаи» предлагается провести вечер так, как это делалось сто лет тому назад, в Земгале – исследовать деревянный замок земгалов в Тервете, в Селии  - природный парк поймы Двиете (среда обитания первобытных людей в Латвии), на берегах Даугавы – восстановленный комплекс Краславского замка, Краславскую католическую церковь, а в Пиебалгской стороне – Друвиенскую старую школу с замечательными историями гида.

Lauku ceļotājs has created a map of the Latvian, Estonian Heritage – a map with 150 magnificent places in Latvia and Estonia where customs which have been passed from one generation to another blend into modern life – whether these are grandmother’s potato pancakes, made not counting calories, or a clear homebrew with the nowadays mandatory excise stamps, and a tag of the owner-manufacturer, or the traditional sign of Jumis on the roofs of new buildings. The map encourages people to visit craftsmen and centres of craftsmen, masters of local and traditional dishes and drinks, small rural food manufacturing companies, fishermen, sites of annual traditional celebrations (such as solstice), farmsteads where visitors can participate in farm works and children can learn more about domestic animals, to visit organic and health holdings, pubs, museums and collections, historic centres of towns, ethnographic villages and territories, events with a theme related to history and reconstructions of historical events, sacred sites and buildings, castles and manors, traditional places for buying souvenirs, nature trails and routes. The map was composed by Lauku ceļotājs cooperating with the Estonian Rural Tourism Association (Eesti maaturism), the map is available in Latvian, Russian, English, German, Estonian, and Finnish.
