Историки утверждают, что ливы на древней территории Латвии появляются с 10-го века. Они селятся в Северной Курземе, в низовьях Даугавы и Гауи. У первых приплывших немецких торговцев они интересуются со знанием дела – Сколько сейчас стоит сукно на рынке в Висбю? Значит, им известен шведский остров Готланд, они хорошие мореплаватели, смелые и сильные духом. Только сильный может ужиться с морем, отправляться на ловлю рыбы и тюленей, укорениться в отнюдь не плодородных песках морского побережья. 
Территория вдоль моря от Гипки до Овиши нам сейчас известна как Ливский берег. Здесь все еще можно увидеть овеянные романтикой приморские ливские рыбацкие поселки. Великий Кришьянис Валдемарс определил, что центр Европы находится на мысе Колка! Следуя его призыву, ливы по всему побережью активно принимали участие в постройке парусников. Они отправлялись в Айнажи получать образование в морской школе, что позволило их короблям достичь самые отдаленные уголки земли. Так появился век парусников. Без ливов его не было бы! На Ливском берегу находятся и самые старейшие латвийские маяки. Овишский маяк все еще как звезда, указывающая на берегу путь кораблям в море, направляющимся в Ригу.
К наследию ливов относятся и традиции ловли миноги, которые до сих пор живы в Царникаве, Светциемсе и Салацгриве. В Салацгриве можно увидеть заколы для миног и приспособления, которые давно больше уже нигде не встречаются.
Латышы появились, когда ливы слились с латгальцами – так шутят сами ливы. И возможно, что в этой шутке есть доля правды.
Культура ливов, язык, образ жизни и история крепко связаны с Латвией и больше не разделимы.

In Estonian, Luitemaa means ‘the land of dunes’. It is the seashore territory of the Gulf of Pärnu, 13 km between Vöiste and Häädemeeste with shallow waters, vast coastal meadows, the highest dune range in Estonia and the Tolkuse Mire (Tolkuse raba). В1699 в центре Нюкши Пасиенские доминиканские монахи построили часовню, на месте которой в 1765 году помещик Хилзен возвел новую церковь. Помещения были маленькие, и в 1922 - 1926 гг. на фундаменте старой церкви строится новая и большая – теперешняя церковь, которую называют одним из самых красивейших деревянных храмов Латгалии. В здании находится центральный алтарь работы второй четверти XVIII века и два боковых алтаря работы примерно 1700 г. Церковь можно осмотреть изнутри.

Главная «артерия» парка — это старинная долина реки Гауя с множественными притоками, и глубокие ущелья с массивными обрывами из песчаника времен девонского периода. Поход начинается от одной из самых старинных церквей в Латвии и идет вдоль реки, заканчиваясь у бобслейной трассы в Сигулде. На следующем этапе путешествия вас ждут живописные виды на реку, обрывы и природные тропы. Водный путь реки Амата вьется через девственные леса, и здесь же находится икона латвийского пейзажа — скала Зварте. В Цесисе откройте для себя маленькие улочки, взберитесь на башню церкви Св. Иоанна и посетите руины средневекового замка, прежде чем отправиться по природной тропе Цирулиши для исследования геологической истории края. Поместье Унгурмуйжа — единственное уцелевшее в странах Балтии деревянное поместье в стиле барокко. Короткая тропа вьется между вековыми дубами.

В парке находятся также несколько важных культурных достопримечательностей: музей-резерват Турайда, поместье Кримулда и исторический центр Лигатне.

This route section takes you to the Dzūkija National Park – it is among Lithuania’s most forested and desolate nature areas –, and to the town of Druskininkai – a popular SPA and mineral water health resort on the banks of the river Nemunas. When in Druskininkai, we recommend dipping yourself in mineral water baths, enjoying the trip with the cable car over the river Nemunas, visiting the musical fountain, and walking along the river promenade. The starting point of the hiking route is the village of Didžiasalis, which is reached by bus from Druskininkai. From there, the route will take you through vast coniferous forests, rich in berries and mushrooms, and small villages. As you get to Druskininkai, the Forest Trail will meander along the small streets and parks of the historic resort of Druskininkai, crossing the river Ratnyčia and the forest park on the right bank of the Nemunas valley. Leaving the resort town behind, the Forest Trail runs on the side of the village revealing you the beautiful landscapes and the view of the Liškiava monastery on the other bank of the river Nemunas. Up to the village of Žiogeliai, the route goes along forest roads and continues along the banks of the Nemunas valley, surrounded by the vast Dzūkija forests. Towards the end of the route, climb up the Merkinė Mound and it will surprise you with breathtaking views of southern Lithuania.

Lielā dziesmu vieta "Dzintari" ir ievērojama ar to, ka tieši tur 1866. gadā norisinājās pirmie latviešu skolēnu koru svētki. Lai iezīmētu šo vietu, 2015. gada vasarā  Madonas novada, Praulienas pagasta, Šūpuļkalnā (Madona – Varakļāni ceļa malā) tika uzstādīts Ivara Mailīša veidotais vides objekts “Latvija skan”. Šajā vietā atrodas arī māja, kurā dzīvojis ievērojamais koru virsdiriģents Haralds Mednis (1906-2000). Lai saglabātu mākslinieka piemiņu, 2016. gadā durvis vēra Haralda Medņa 20. gs. 30. gados uzceltā māja “Dzintari”. Tajā apskatāma izstādes par virsdiriģentu Haraldu Medni un Pirmajiem latviešu skolēnu koru svētkiem. Vietai dots skanīgs nosaukums – Lielā dziesmu vieta “Dzintari”.

At the Aizkraukle Lutheran church along the upper part of the shores of the ancient Daugava River valley, there is a bit of an old road from which one of the most beautiful views of the central section of the river can be seen, particularly when the trees are bare. Approximately one kilometre to the North-west is the Aizkraukle castle hill, which offers a no less impressive view.
