Возможно,  Мадона – это единственный город в Латвии, на территории которого примерно в  IX веке находилось озерное поселение.  Остатки поселения сохранились под водой в северной части озера Салас (Церковный остров). До конца XIX века на месте теперешнего города находилась небольшая господская усадьба с таким же названием (Мадона), которую латыши называли Биржи. В 1898 году начато строительство узкоколейной железной дороги между Стукмани (Плявиняс) и Валкой. С развитием железной дороги, развивался и сам город. Современная Мадона – это ухоженный город Виздеме со своим  шармом, характерным для провинциального городка. Интересно то, что Мадону можно считать городом Латвии, расположенным в самой высокой части рельефа.

The territory has been established for protection of the bog and its habitat species. It is not appropriate for visits. North-east part of the bog can be slightly seen from the road Neveja – Lapmezciems on winter season. Further on Cirste direction is located on of most impressive oak trees in Latvia – Rigzemju ozols.

The national park was established to protect the 100 or so small islands that make up the archipelago of the local area. The largest island, the Vilsandi Island, is 6 km long and up to 2 km wide. You can rent a boat to get there, or, during appropriate conditions, you can walk across the sea and the small islands from the southern end of the Kuusnõmme peninsula.

Atrodas ~ 1,5 km ziemeļos no Krāslavas centra, Jāņupītes krastā (ir norāde). Pēc atsevišķiem savrupatradumiem var spriest, ka pilskalns apdzīvots laikā no I g. t. pr. Kristus līdz vēlajam dzelzs laikmetam. Domājams, ka savu nosaukumu tas ieguvis šeit sastopamo mālu dēļ. Nelielas mālu ieguves vietas pilskalna nogāzēs ir redzamas arī šodien. Saglabājies nostāsts, ka grāfs Plāters šeit apraudājis savu sievu, kuru pats neuzticības dēļ licis iemūrēt pazemē.

Elka Hill is one of the highest surfaces in the western part of the Vidzeme highlands, and it offers a lovely and broad view to the North. There is a small parking lot, a TV and radio tower, and the place where the Gauja River is thought to originate.

This route section takes you to the Dzūkija National Park – it is among Lithuania’s most forested and desolate nature areas –, and to the town of Druskininkai – a popular SPA and mineral water health resort on the banks of the river Nemunas. When in Druskininkai, we recommend dipping yourself in mineral water baths, enjoying the trip with the cable car over the river Nemunas, visiting the musical fountain, and walking along the river promenade. The starting point of the hiking route is the village of Didžiasalis, which is reached by bus from Druskininkai. From there, the route will take you through vast coniferous forests, rich in berries and mushrooms, and small villages. As you get to Druskininkai, the Forest Trail will meander along the small streets and parks of the historic resort of Druskininkai, crossing the river Ratnyčia and the forest park on the right bank of the Nemunas valley. Leaving the resort town behind, the Forest Trail runs on the side of the village revealing you the beautiful landscapes and the view of the Liškiava monastery on the other bank of the river Nemunas. Up to the village of Žiogeliai, the route goes along forest roads and continues along the banks of the Nemunas valley, surrounded by the vast Dzūkija forests. Towards the end of the route, climb up the Merkinė Mound and it will surprise you with breathtaking views of southern Lithuania.

Одна из самых красивых набережных Латвии. Расположена в северной части Старого города Вентспилса. Началом набережной на улице Остас в восточной ее части служит «Тиргоню дарзс» (здесь же Вентспилсский ТИЦ) и Юракменс. Набережная украшена скульптурами коров, памятниками, фонтанами и цветочными композициями. До середины прошлого столетия на улице Остас находились склады - амбары, часть из которых сохранилась. Напротив замка Ливонского ордена установлен памятник Кришьянису Валдемару. У пристани стоит кораблик «Герцог Екаб».

This section of the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route is a comparatively short hike across a beautiful sandy beach, the coastal side of which is bounded by brightly colored pine forests with spectacular dunes and dams of dunes. To get from the beach to Carnikava, the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route will take you through a forest via a promenade. Then it takes a stroll around the Old Gauja River via a levee and reaches the pedestrian bridge over the Gauja River. Both as you start and end the hike, it is nice to sit in one of the pubs and summer cafés located on Vecāķi beach and in Carnikava.

Further on you will visit the famous Lake Āraiši Castle, hike on the Cirulisi nature trails and see the beautiful medieval town of Cesis. On the way to Estonia you will stop at the Sietiņiezis big sandstone cliff to have picturesque views of the River Gauja. Then you will stay in Estonia’s second biggest city – Tartu, and visit the recently opened Estonian National Museum.
