The Dinaburga trail first goes downhill, and then it quickly goes uphill to the steep shores of the Daugava river. Among a set of gullies, there is the Naujene (Vecpils) castle hill – some 25m high and the “cradle” of the city of Daugavpils. The ruins of the castle are still visible, and a unique open-air model of the old Dinaburga castle has been prepared. There is a lovely view of the Daugava river valley, and the visitor can expect to spend 20 minutes to an hour here. Objects are located in a protected area of Augšzeme landscapes and in the Curves of Daugava nature park.

In the house that was renovated due to the initiative of the Craftsmen society of Beverina, it is possible to buy the products of both the district craftsmen and those from further territories, to visit creative workshops and events in order to learn the techniques of differnt handicrafts. The house is both a teaching centre and a marketplace, as well as the centre to popularise the cultural, folk and Latvian lifestyle of the Beverina district. |

The New Cēsis Castle (Pils Square 9) was built in 1777 as a residence for Karl Eberhard von Zievers, and it is home to the Cēsis Museum of History and Art, which was opened in 1949. The building has a neo-Gothic tower decorated with curved arcades and window apertures. It is one of the first examples of eclecticism in Latvian architecture. Beginning in 2012, the museum will feature a modern exhibition under the title "Latvia: Symbol of Latvian History." This will be an interactive exhibition featuring the history of Cēsis and its environs since the era of the Vendians and up to the early 20th century. There will be sections on the history of the Latvian flag, the lives of the Zievers dynasty, and the family's great contributions toward the development of Cēsis. The third and fourth floors of the castle are dedicated to temporary exhibitions, and there is a special room there for families and children. The tower of the castle offers the best view of the Cēsis Castle ruins, the old town, and St John's Lutheran church. |

Name of Ainazi is an integral part of the Latvian maritime history. The first Naval School, which was able to learn the Latvian peasant children, was established here in 1864. Naturally - Ainazi became an important Latvian coastal shipbuilding centre and port. Economic life of the town was also facilitated by the opening of Smiltene -Valmiera-Ainazi narrow-gauge railway line in1913. Today Ainazi is a small and quiet town on the Latvian - Estonian border with a number of interesting sightseeing objects. |

A gift shop in the old town of Cēsis near Rose Square, in the building of the former hotel "Baltischer Hof". The shop is named after the hotel's former owner, Karlīne. It is possible to buy gifts, handicraft items, souvenirs, as well as delicious homemade products, homemade wines and spirits here. |

Latvia’s highest hill is the second highest in the Baltic States, but alas, it has only a wrecked viewing tower, so you’ll have to look for the best views on your own. You’ll find some around the tower and the ski trails, particularly Large and Small Golgotha. It is worth hiking the Gaiziņkalns nature trail.

This is an authentic Lettigalian farm which dates back to the early 20th century. It features a house, granary, cattle shed, sauna and smithy. Folklore groups perform here. Cesvaine was first mentioned in written sources in 1209. For each traveller in Latvia, the town is associated with the family of Baron Woolf, who bought the Cesvaine estate in 1815. Cesvaine experienced the economic boom after establishment of Plavinas Gulbene railway. Town suffered significantly during the World War II. At the end of 2002, the Cesvaine Castle was struck by the tragedy - a fire, which damaged most of the castle. Cesvaine Castle is "recovering" by means of large public, state and local government support and still keeps the status as a significant tourism attraction in a scale of Vidzeme and Latvia. |
