This professional tour will look at fruit farms that selection, breed and grow breeds that are appropriate for Latvia’s weather conditions. During the introductory day, participants will tour Rīga, which is part of the UNESCO List of World Heritage, and also visit a health food store. On the second day, it is off to Kurzeme, where we will visit a farm that has developed a special technology for the processing of sea buckthorn in a way that preserves all of the vitamins and minerals that are in the berries. We will visit Wine Hill in Sabile, where grapes have been grown since the 16th or 17th century. Some 15 types of grapes that have been adapted to Latvia’s climate are grown here now. Next we will visit the Kukši Estate, which offers a look at the cultural environment of baronial estates in the 18th and 19th century. We will return to Rīga via the Jūrmala spa and have dinner at a Latvian saloon. The next morning we will travel to Vidzeme to look at a former peat swamp where large cranberries are grown now. The farm has its own processing technologies to manufacture candies, syrups, juices and teas. Next we will visit Latvia’s first blueberry farm for a tour and tastings. At the end of the day, we will visit a farm that grows cranberries and blackberries, emphasising successful and healthy food products and their marketing. On the morning of the fourth day, we will visit the Medieval Cēsis castle, which was the residence of the masters of the Livonian Order and one of the most fortified fortresses in the territory of the Baltic States. We will visit an agricultural technical school in Priekuļi to meet with faculty members. At the conclusion of the day, we will go to Ungurmuiža Estate, which is one of the most outstanding examples of 18th century Baroque wood construction in Latvia. The mansion (1732) is the only early 18th century wooden building of this type that has been preserved to this very day. |

One of the buildings of the Kalnmuiža Estate has an oven in which the owner bakes rye bread with seeds, sourdough bread, and bread with dried fruit. Informational tours are available, and you can take part in the baking process. You can taste the bread and buy loaves to take home with you. |

It is said that Krišjānis Valdemārs began to dream about a port at this location when he was a child, but a so-called protective port was only established in Roja in the early 20th century, with a protective dam 500 metres from the shore that was 213 m long. The dam gradually disappeared, and the port was shut down in 1933. Work on straightening the Roja River began in the 1930s, using a French machine to create berms and build rock dams and pile-based breakwaters that were subsequently extended several times. This territory is around 9 square kilometres in size and is found to the North of the village of Kūdra, where the so-called old peat quarries are found. Peat was extracted here during the first period of Latvian independence. Today the territory is overgrown, preserving the old and flooded quarries which offer a very unusual landscape. The best way to examine them is on foot or bike, taking the road from the Kūdra railroad station which leads to Lake Sloka. |

Historians say that Liv tribes began to settle the territory that is now Latvia in the 10th century. They lived in Northern Kurzeme, at the mouths of the Daugava and Gauja Rivers, and from Ģipka to Oviši, where seaside fishing villages of Liv origin can still be found. Coastal residents have always eaten various sea, river and lake fish dishes, including smoked sole, Baltic herring, cod, bream or eelpout, baked lampreys, salted sprats, Baltic herring and common herring. Fresh and lightly salted Baltic salmon is a delicacy. Whole fish are baked on hot coals, including pike perch, trout, carp, catfish and European perch. Guests can participate in catching and smoking fish and tastings with bits of everything is available on degustations. Rye can be tasted in rye bread and sourdough bread, carrot buns and even pancakes and gingerbread. Barley buns are common in Vidzeme, as are tasty meat and fowl dishes. There will always be a pig's snout with peas or an oven-roasted piglet on New Year's Eve. Taverns serve wild game with lingonberries, mushrooms and other wild tastes. Side dishes include autumn vegetables, pumpkin, beans or grits, as well as sinfully tasty sauces. Enjoy traditional pies, sheet cakes, pretzels, apple cakes and honey bakes during celebrations or every day. You will enjoy desserts made of rye breadcrumbs, cranberries, lingonberries and sweet cream. Popular in Kurzeme are blackberry dumplings, and during summers, there are lots of desserts with fresh berries. In 1951, when it died, the pine tree had a circumference of 4.63 metres. It was the thickest pine tree in the Baltic States
This is one of the few trees with such a long history for which age has been determined by counting up circles – 370 years. All that’s left is a conserved part of the stump at the side of the road. Cross-sections of the stump are on exhibit at the Latvian Museum of Nature and the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum.
