The Kurzeme Peninsula has the largest landscape of hillocks and valleys in Europe in the shoreline segment from Melnsils and Kolka to Oviši and Liepene.  It is a unique landscape in Latvia, and part of it is in the Slītere National Park.  The Pēterezers Nature Trail offers the best chance to look at the landscape.  There are hillocks and valleys elsewhere, too – near shoreline villages where the Kukšupe valley (one of the longest ones – 8 km in all) is crossed by the Ventspils-Kolka highway, as well as near Apakšceļš.  The only thing is that you need to learn how to spot the areas out in nature.

Here you will learn about home-based manufacturers, farms, companies and others in Kurzeme that produce various dairy products such as milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, ice cream, etc.  Begin in Tukums, which offers lots of interesting foods and beverages.  Then cross the ancient Abava River valley, which is one of the most beautiful river valleys in Latvia.  The route leads to Wine Hill in Sabile and then Talsi, the “city of nine hillocks.”  Further on you will find Dundaga and its legendary castle, pass through large and lonely forests on your way to Ventspils, and then continue along the shore of the Baltic sea to Medze.  From there, travel back into the centre of Kurzeme, through Aizpute and Kazdanga, which is known for its own castle.  Visit Latvia’s first shiitake mushroom farm at Garīkas, the Milk Estate and the Milk Museum.  Further on will be Saldus with its tasty treats, then Džūkste, and then back to Tukums, where we started.

Kolski iedzīvotājus līdzīgi kā citviet Baltijas valstīs pēc 2. pasaules kara deportēja uz Sibīriju. Kolski apkārtnē redzamie mājdzīvnieki „apsaimnieko” šejienes pļavas, neļaujot tām aizaugt ar mežu. Tādējādi tiek uzturēta apkaimes vēsturiskā ainava. 3 km dienvidrietumos meklējams Kobasāres ciems. Tā nosaukums (koopa no igauņu valodas nozīmē ala, saar – sala) atgādina par Ziemeļu kara notikumiem, kura laikā cilvēki slēpušies pašu raktās alās. Kobasārē un tam blakus esošajā Apjas (Apja) ciemā var izbaudīt patiesi 21. gadsimtam nepierastas lauku ainavas.

Im Zentrum der Ortschaft Plazis nahe der Landstraße Inčukalns – Valka (A3) befindet sich ein vom Bildhauer Teodors Zaļkalns errichtetes Denkmal für die Befreier von Nordlettland in 1919. Die Inschrift des Denkmals lautet: “Solange ihr Getreide auf diesen Feldern sät, werdet ihr geehrt haben”. Diese Wörter gehören dem lettischen Schriftsteller Edvarts Virza. Auf dem Denkmal ist ein Bauer mit einem Schwert nahe dem gespannten Pferd dargestellt.

Vom elterlichen Haus des hervorragenden lettischen Publizisten, Pädagogen und Sprachwissenschaftler Atis Kronvalds (1837 – 1875) „Lejas Miķi” im Bezirk Priekule in Krote ist nichts bis heutzutage geblieben. An der Stelle des Hauses befindet sich eine Gedenkplatte mit Inschrift: „Für jeden ist jener Platz heilig, wo geboren und aufgewachsen ist” (A. Kronvalds).
