This is a comparatively large lake (3 km long and 1.3 km wide). It is shallow (no more than 1.1 m deep) and is classified as a seashore lake. The Vecslocene River flows through it. At the southern end, there is a narrow stream which connects Lake Sloka with Aklo Lake – a shallow and small lake with a dolomite bed at some locations. The best view of Lake Sloka can be seen from the bird watching tower on its north-western shore. This is the only floating bird watching tower in Latvia. Alongside it is the beginning of the 3 km Lake Sloka hiking trail, which passes through the flooded wetlands of the lower reaches of the Vēršupīte. An information stand can be found on the shore of Lake Sloka by the car park. Beyond it is a sulphurous spring. |

The guest house is located in Varnja Old Believers village and on the Onion Route - a destination on the shores of Lake Peipsi, the largest lake in Estonia and the trans-border lake of the European Union. It is about 45 km from Tartu. It offers the oppurtunity to experience authentic accommodation in a real home of an Old Believer family. Everything from the furnishing up to spoons and forks is as authentic as possible. The house has three rooms that can accommodate up to 10 people. Der Ukri – Wald an der Grenze des Dobele – Gebietes ist als riesiger Wald bekannt. Es gibt Eichen (es sind viele riesige darunter), Linden, Eschen (große Bestände an Eschen sind in Lettland ungewöhnlich) und andere Laubbäume. Ein kleiner Teil des Waldes kann in Begleitung eines Führers durchquert werden, der die Tiere des Gebietes und ihre Bedeutung für die Natur erklärt. Das Schutzgebiet schützt die Waldbiotope, Pflanzen und Tiere, einschließlich vieler Arten, die für den Süden Lettlands typisch sind.

Latvia’s highest hill is the second highest in the Baltic States, but alas, it has only a wrecked viewing tower, so you’ll have to look for the best views on your own. You’ll find some around the tower and the ski trails, particularly Large and Small Golgotha. It is worth hiking the Gaiziņkalns nature trail.

Das Museum befindet sich auf einem Hof, der der Region Ziemeļkurzeme (Nordkurland) charakteristisch ist und wo der lettische Schriftsteller Ernests Birznieks Upītis (1871 – 1960) geboren wurde. Samstags wird hier das Programm Samstag auf einem Hof angeboten, das die Möglichkeit gibt, an alltäglichen Arbeiten auf dem Land teilzunehmen und das Leben auf dem Land zu erkunden. Die Interessenten können hier die Traditionen des Brotbackens aus dem Ende des 19. Jhs. kennenlernen oder an traditionellen lettischen Festen teilnehmen. |

Aus Lehm, Steinmasse und anderen Materialien formt die Töpferin Geschirr und verschiedene Gegenstände für Innenausstattung und sie brennt ihre Werke in einem offenen Brennofen. Die Besucher können hier an einer Führung teilnehmen, die Handwerkerin bei ihrer Arbeit beobachten, selber eine Tasse formen, sowie die Werkstatt beim Öffnen des Brennofens besuchen. |

Das Café befindet sich im Zentrum von Gaigalava, in dem ehemaligen Verwaltungsgebäude der Kolchose. Für die Vorbereitung der Speisen werden Produkte aus dem eigenen Hof und aus anderen Höfen verwendet. Lettische Küche: Bohnensuppe mit Graupen, Sauerkrautsuppe, Erbsensuppe, Suppe aus den Blättern der roten Beete, Ampfersuppe, Fischsuppe aus Schleien oder Karpfen, gebratene Rippen, Braten, falscher Hase, im Ofen gebackener Karpfen, getrocknete Fische, Quarkcreme mit Kompott, gebackene Äpfel mit Vanillesoße, geflochtene Rouladen, getrocknete Früchte und kandierte Quitten. Das besondere Gericht: Bohnenpfannkuchen. |

Die Töpferin bietet Kurse an, bei denen man selbst Erzeugnisse aus Ton kreieren und diese brennen kann. In der Werkstatt sind sowohl Kindergartengruppen und Schulklassen willkommen als auch Erwachsene und Senioren. Die Töpferin hat auch Erfahrung im Umgang mit Behinderten. In der Töpferwerkstatt kann man fertige Erzeugnisse kaufen. |

Before its flooding, the canyon of the Daugava River between Pļaviņas and Koknese was one of the most outstanding and beautiful parts of the Baltic terrain, and Oliņkalns hill was one of the largest castle hills in Latvia. The Andrejs cliff as up to 20 metres high, and it was part of the Daugava canyon. Before the area was flooded because of the construction of the Pļaviņas hydroelectric power plant, there were rapids near the hill that made it hard for rafters to sail down the river. Today it is a small island in the reservoir of the plant (it can be seen from the side of the Rīga-Daugavpils highway (A6) opposite Stukmaņi). It is separated from the shore by 300 metres of river, under which the Dūņas valley is now resting. A small part of the ramparts of the castle hill can still be seen on the island along with the ruins of an open-air stage and a few metres of the dolomite cliff that have remained above water. It is thought that the Alene castle was on the hill in the 13th century. Latvian mountain climbers installed a memorial stone in 1998 opposite Oliņkalns hill. |
