Success and sustainability of eco-tourism products. "EU Flower" - the EU eco-label for tourist accommodation services
The EU eco-label for tourist accommodation services was introduced in May 2003 (Commission decision EC/287/2003) covering various types of accommodations (e.g. hotel chains, mountain huts, B&Bs, farm houses except camp sites). Ecological criteria for camp sites are under development and are planned to be adopted in September 2004. From 1 May 2004 on the EU eco-label is applicable in all the 25 Member States of the EU, Norway, Lichtenstein and Island.
Eco-labelled accommodations can profit from the various general marketing activities for the Flower. In addition there are some targeted marketing activities in place to introduce the new tourism label in the market. Interest for it has been considerable and the number of successful applications is growing. For more information http://europa.eu.int/ecolabel and http://www.eco-label.com
